Bolt Action Action!!

In the heat of the moment, with a magazine rifle, when a fast follow up shot or shots is required, should you work the bolt with the rifle butt at your shoulder?
Is this the fastest/ safest/ best way to use a bolt action or can you reload and shoot just as fast by taking the rifle off the shoulder, reload, and then snap it back up to your shoulder again?

I think you should work the bolt with the stock on the shoulder ,that way you do not lose sight of the target.This however requires practice,and a few dry runs should do it.Removing the rifle from the shoulder means you have to re-focus and that may cost you the game.

Due to the cost of brass and reloading I got into the habit of always taking the rifle off my shoulder and ejecting the cartridge so I could find it.

Realized this did not aid fast reloading so practiced with a .22 firing off whole magazines at the shoulder. Shoot off 50 or so to break the whole habit. Sometimes need to do a "refresher" but it is also good off-hand practice.

Now I find I loose at least half my .375 brass on a hunt.

Not a problem with a extracting double

What I really need is a video of myself. When I have blazed away in a hurry when hunting dangerous game, I did so as fast as I could, but have no recollection of were the rifle was when I was reloading.

Yes, you should be able to reload with the butt of the stock still in your shoulder.

Start practising slowly with a .22, concentrating on accuracy and reloading and
then work up the calibres - 243, 30-06, 375, 458, 500 etc etc and you will soon
be proficient at it (at least on the range !!!)

Practice enables me to achieve (with a Scoped 30-06) 4 shots in 10 seconds,
with ALL of them in the killing zone at 50 yards (9 or 10 ring on an 8" Black Bull)

Also, IF it's dangerous game, I prefer to keep my eye on the game and find that if I
pull the gun off the shoulder, I automatically look down at the gun.

Regarding loss of Brass - when hunting animals, forget about the brass. It's inexpensive
compared to what you pay for an OS hunt / Trophy fee. You may lose 4 - 6 cases
if your unlucky (I find your normally find the first 2 shots where you started shooting, it's the
ones you fire while running through the bush that you may not find).

That's my .02 cents worth. I would be interested in hearing other people's views.

For my style of shooting I find it much better to drop the rifle down a bit to reload then snap it back up again.

I don't look down at the rifle but keep my eye on the animal.

Fired cases almost always end up in my back pocket even when they are old and I want to get rid of them!
Just been puttin' 'em there for that long that it just happens without needing to think about it.

I find that you get a lot better controll over the bolt with the rifle lowered a bit, and this can be important if a case is a bit sticky coming out of the chamber or a fresh round is a bit tight coming out of the mag.

Also a bolt that works real slick at the shooting range might not be quite as smooth when it's covered in a layer of outback dust .

I also find it is much easier to keep track of an animal, partiularly in thick bush, by watching it with both eyes open using normal vision rather than trying to peer through the scope while your cranking a bolt at top speed.

But then I shoot with both eyes open either with scope or open sights and I make sure my serious guns fit me well, feed cartridges properly, and over the years I have spent many rounds practicing snap shooting.

Works for me!
