Dream a little...
      #12572 - 27/03/04 09:21 AM

OK now if you could add one species of animal to Australia which would it be and why?
Remember, there isn't much in the way of protection so it has to be resilient.
Something that would survive in a dry area maybe, so the farmers won't wipe them out immediately...

I am torn between a few antelope species....
Addax/Scimitar Oryx-virtually extinct in wild, needs no water and poor feed BUT easily chased down by rednecks and shot
Springbok-would reproduce rapidly and adapts well...
DREAM
KUDU/SABLE- I know, I know they wouldn't last a NY minute, but DAMN would it be good while it lasted!!

What do you guys think? If a remote station released a few head of game, would people find out before a nice population had emerged? Would a scapegoat be found? Would choppers soon descend on the herds and cut them down?

There is proberly stuff like that roaming wild NOW. When I lived near Newcastle the was a heard of feral Alpacca's living in the scrub around the base. My pick would be kudu. I think they would do alright up here in the Territory. The bush is nearly the same as Africa.

Yes ,Kudu would be a good one. Maybe a few Dall sheep for down south. How about lots of wild Cape Buffalo and warthogs.

How about Bongo in the NT? You would never find them.

Bongo would do better in the rain forrest of FNQ. Warthogs would do alright. Some of the smaller lope's would be interesting.

Yeah, I forgot all about warthogs. Fast breeders, but they do need permanent water unlike springbok/gemsbok.
Bongo need dark, wet forests not scrub.
Hey Bakes what is an alpacca??
It is a pity that you don't have his stuff in stead of feral animals (although imagine if they weren't around either!!) The red deer/water buffalo were definitely NOT mistakes, but replace the hogs with warthogs/bushpigs and the feral goats with IMPALA or pronghorn antelope!!!!
I am positive nilgai would do well if given half a chance (frost kills them though)....the possibilities are endless.
Nevertheless, count your blessings and go hunt some ferals with no bag limits/seasons/licences/trophy fees...

An alpacca is a cousin of a lama, bred for its wool.

Warthogs/bushpigs would be good to hunt but they're still only pigs so you ould be replacing one with the other. The bushpig and our feral pig would likely interbreed, that would be interesting, and with all the cattle stations around there is always water somewhere.

Well alpaca's are lucky they don't have antlers/horns...
I guess I didn't think about crop damage/environmental effect....but browsing antelope don't have much effect if properly controlled and are easier to restrict the pigs...
Now don't you wish they had introduced ibex/marco polo sheep/markhor in the Southern Alps of NZ (no one is complaining about the Thar BTW!!)
It would only take a few zebras here and there to make the donkey population a LOT more interesting (the cross freely)
Now all that is left is finding a nice landowner that will allow a little 'experimentation'

I would really like having some things that bite. A big boar in lignum or a grumpy old scrub bull can be exciting but that is about as good as it gets here.
