.375 Lite & .375 Stout

Here's a nifty little combination I worked up a few years ago.

I shot from my normal zeroing position from 100 meters sitting, elbows on knees like this:

The group on the left is the 220 Hornady Flat Point @ 2440 fps. The group on the right is my old standby; Hornady 300 gr @ 2450. As you can see, they print very close to each other in spite of the differences in bullet weight.

Years ago when I worked the "lite" load up I wanted a load with essentially 9.3x57 performance with a light bullet in the .375, and it works out to be that way just about perfectly, though it took some time to figure it out. Load after load was tested before I came up with this one. With the rifle zeroed with 300 full-power loads, most of the 220 loads flew wide in the ditch.

I've killed lots of game with the 300 gr Hornady, but I've never killed anything with the 220, though I may use it on deer this year. The 220 essentially duplicates the velocity of the 220 grain bullet in the .30-06, but recoil is very light from my SAKO.

I shot some stuff in Africa with the 270 gr Hornady Spire Point bullet, and some deer with the 235 gr Speer, but years ago I settled more or less on the Hornady 300 for all my game shooting which since then has been mostly deer and elk and the occaisional yote. Having said that, it's kind of nice to have a "Lite" option if I should need it or want it. That 220 FP should make a very fine deer load.

I've always prefered Stout over Lite, and still do, but at least in the .375 maybe the watered-down version just might have some utility.

I have killed a few deer with the 220 Hornady at around 2400/2500fps.

Works great. Killed one at 175 yards.

I use IMR 3031 powder just because I had a lot of it on hand.

I have also killed a few deer with the 235 Speer at the same velocity. It too works great.

That's similar to what my Sauer 202 does with 225gr & 270gr Hornady spire points. I use 69grs of H-4895 for both weights and get 2700 & 2600 respectively with low pressures and to a similar point of aim. The 225 grainer is great for low recoil and is great on deer & pigs. I find that big bullet at moderate speed kills faster and with less damage tham my 300 mag rifle and recoils very similar in the 7.5 lb. Sauer.

As for the 235 grain Speer, it is a good deer bullet. I've killed several deer with it at full tilt velocity. Trouble is, they always shot very high out of my rifle and I could not use the same sight setting as that for my 300 grain load. The "current" Lite 220 shoots as pictured a wee bit high but very close. I just bought some 225 Hornady's and in comparing the two bullets, the 220 appears to have a longer bearing surface. I loaded up some 225's using the same 5744 charge as the 220's, and will be interested to see where they print. The 5744 load gives velocities pretty similar to that obtainable from a similar weight bullet in the 9.3x57 which was the original goal {along with similar sighting}.

450: I am not shocked to hear of your good success with the 220 at longish range for a FP. If you look at my post on the .375 Penetration thread you will see that the 220 opens fast in my test media and does not penetrate quite as far as does the 300, but in that "torture test" at 20 meters, it holds together fairly well. This usually indicates pretty good performance at 150-200 yards as the bullet has "gone to sleep" by then and with lower velocity penetration increases. Usually. Some very low velocity rounds just don't have the speed necessary even to do any work past 150.

Anyway, what velocity were you pushing the 220 at? I suspect you were driving that bullet at full speed and thus at 175 or so you would have velocity similar to my low speed load.
