44 Mag for Russian boar hunting?
      #41567 - 15/11/05 01:13 PM

Hi,
I have a cute little Marlin carbine in 44 Mag that I would like to take to a drive boar hunt here in Europe. Is this a good idea? Most pigs are small, but a few can reach over 400 pounds. A few days ago I took my scoped BLR 308W to a big hunt (31 hunters, many dogs) but all the pigs killed were under 100 pounds and shot inside 30 meters, so I got this 44 Mag idea... Your comments are very wellcome.

Kind regards,
Lovec

Lovec,

I've used a .44 magnum out of a handgun for hogs with no problems whatsoever. If you have loads with bullets that can take the higher velocity that you'll get from your Marlin, I see no reason why it shouldn't perform well.

Richard.

Ditto, its all about bullets. Stay away from hollow-points if possible, though they would probably work quite well on 100-pounders inside 30 metres. Better to get a tough RN softpoint if you can, heavier the better, just in case a big fellow turns up!.

I don't know why it would not work well. I have taken a lot of pigs with a .45 revolver and heavy cast bullets. Most at under 30 yds. It worked very well out to about 100 yds. The .44 from a rifle should do at least as well. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I think I would stick to heavy bullets at as fast as they will safely go. I once used some 225 gr. hollowpoint bullets at about 1600 fps and tuned my revolver into a .45 swift. Nasty wounds but lots of cripples as I got zero penetration. I went back to 300 gr. cast bullets and no more problems.

As mentioned above , bullet selection is the key to making a .44 magnum work on pigs . The one below absorbed about 5 shots from a Marlin before succumbing . Rifle was borrowed and we think they were factory loads of some description .

How about Hornady 300 grn XTP's? Seem a sturdy bullet!
