Question: 10.4" barrel length in 308 Win rifle?
      #263135 - 05/04/15 12:15 AM

Gentlemen,

foreword:
I am looking for a rifle in .308 Win. which will be used for following wild boars in heavy-wooded or brush thickets. The animals are normally shot badly (i.e. gut shot) by hunting guests and I have the task to find and shoot the boar.
Shooting ranges will be very close (0-20 meters) and several shots will be fired in a hurry for either preventing the boar to tackle the hunting-dog or the dog-owner or to prevent the boar from escaping another time.

possible problem solving:
A semi-auto rifle based on a Heckler&Koch roller-locking action in 308 Win was offered with a 265mm barrel (= 10.4 inch) with polygonal rifling.
The salesman told me that the muzzle blast and velocity loss was not severe.
The rifle will be equipped with a detachable muzzle flash-hider, but
test shooting will not be possible, the rifle shall be sold in "new condition"

What do you think?
- Shall I buy it and load ammunition with fast burning powders ?
- or skip the idea because it will be a very loud blinding device after the first shot (like treated with a stun grenade explosion milliseconds before the boar arrives at my legs)?

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome!

best regards
Rolf

I personally would use a good 12 bore pump-gun, 20" to 22" - not an autoloader - Rem M870 or Mossberg M835 or 500 (Benneli or other Euro maker must have one) with full rifled tube, using 2-3/4" slug loads (less recoil than 3") if possible - Brenneke would work for me, but I would prefer heavy round ball loads due to improved penetration.

Learn to use it, with practice you will be able to shoot more quickly with accuracy, than can be done with an autoloader.

Every one of my Riot Squad team members could do this.

Hello Daryl,
hello Ripp,

thank you for your comments!

a)@ Daryl: yes, I have a Rem 870 shotgun with the shortest legal allowed barrel of 16", but I have no access to a shooting range which allows me to shoot pump-guns in a hurry like IPSC-style.
Training with semi-auto rifles: no problem
It would be a great gun to start with, but without enough training it is simply not for me.

@ Ripp: are you kidding?
on such occasions I take a handgun with me, of course!
But I do not think that I am a good enough shooter under stress, so I regard it as "back-up", not as my primary weapon.
And as I wrote, the animal might be running away, so I feel much better with a good handling and very short rifle to connect with a running boar at 20 or 30 or even 40 yards! (something I can forget with my handgun in a hurry)

Thank you!
Rolf

Blaser R93, with a 18" barrel ( shorter if German law allowes it ).

Then, get the barrel threaded for a suppresor.

Hello Northman,

I feel sorry to turn down every proposal of the supportive Nitroexpress-Clan, but

I dislike immensely Blaser, R93 and R8 ...

How long will the muzzle flash hider be?

I assume from 50 mm to 100 mm(?).

If so, a 15 inch or 38 cm barrel would be better anyway. IMO.

I don't know how long a barrel would have to be to burn up the powder properly and what the shortist practical barrel in 7.62 can be had in military rifles? But doubt normal ammo would burn all the powder up in such a short barrel.

For a follow up shortish barrel rifle for wounded boar, I would go for a heavier calibre size.

Rolf: I dislike the R93/R8 myself.. even though it has alot of good sides as well.

If I where to build one of these rifles, I would search for a M98 action. Prefrebly in 9,3x62 or x57. There should be hundres of good rifles in Germany. Search egun.de

A 18" barrel and a good suppressor. Dont risk your hearing or people near you! Keep the factory trigger and original safety.

Hallo Rolf,

How about one of these: http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=5308224

At 1020mm overall length it is about the same as the H&K with suppressor, and you have the longer barrel with improved ballistics and sight radius, plus a "Sauhammer" of a caliber. I don't know what the H&K costs, but I don't imagine it's cheap. The few which are available used here (they haven't been imported since 1986) cost close to $3000. A Doctor sight or a low powered scope would complete the outfit.

Plus, since Marktoberdorf is only about 100 km away, you can carry on the transaction face to face and actually handle the gun before you pay for it.

Bill
