Should Kenya re-introduce hunting?
      #3300 - 13/06/03 12:01 AM

Poaching controls unabated in Kenya. Yet the claim of stopping safari hunting in the previous hunter's paradise was to "save the animals".

Save them for whom???

War On Poaching Intensified

The East African
June 7, 2003

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) have recovered over 7,000 snare traps from poachers from Tsavo East and West national parks within one year.

The traps are used to catch dik dik, impala, giraffes and buffaloes.

Sixteen subsistence and commercial poachers have also been arrested and charged in court for consuming and selling game meat. At the same, time, more than 40 animals were found trapped in the parks by the two conservation organisations.

Speaking at Manyani yesterday during a clean up exercise, DSWT head of the disnaring team, Mr Isaack Maina was accompanied by Tsavo East tourist warden, Mr Daniel Njoroge.

The clean up exercise, which was conducted by DSWT and KWS officials, covered a 20 km stretch from Manyani to Man Eaters. It was aimed at keeping Tsavo parks free of garbage. About six tonnes of litter were collected and disposed of.

If they are serious about conservation, then they should send teams to Tanzania and Zimbabwe to learn about how and why conservation works in those countries.

If they claim to have found 7,000 snares, you can bet there's at least 10 times that many still out there.

This is what happens when the animals lose "value". Photo tourists do not spend enough to support the economies of the burgeoning resident populations. Hunting on the other hand, as we know, does put a lot of money in plus we feed the people and that way the animals benefit over all. Game is a renewable resource like any crop. Shame these silly governments cannot see that.
