Mauser Model B in 9.3x62MM

Attached are photos of my Mauser model B in 9.3x62MM.The stock is showing some abuse in the form of scratches and the horn buttplate is chipped and worm eaten. The rear trigger was broken at some point and welded back together. The bore is bright and shiny with proud lands and grooves. The crown is very nice. All numbers are matching.

I do not have the scope. Perhaps in the future I will order some Recknagle claw mount parts and fit them to the existing bases. I have a couple of period scopes around that would be suitable.

I have not had it to the range yet and don’t know when I will. I doubt I will hunt with it as my disabilities have kept from the woods for a number of years now. But I live in hope.

The serial number puts the rifle in the 1928-1929 era, I would guess 1928.

The numbers on the barrel under the wood, 9,05 . 9,3 . 36 0 refer to a 9.05MM land diameter and a 9.3MM groove diameter. I do not know what the 36 0 means, maybe a proof house ledger number? Could it be the bore diameter in inch measurement? The 99,7 refers to the barrel caliber in the old German gauge sizes, it works out to be .360 diameter though a 9.3MM should be a .366”. I would welcome any information on helping to interpret these numbers.

I was thinking of getting a replacement buttplate from this company http://homesteadparts.com/shopcart/24/Buttplates.htm The replacement buttplate I am looking at is in the second row down in the middle, #860. Has anybody used them? Are they a good reproduction of the Mauser buttplates?

Thats a nice rifle. With just a bit of cosmetic touch up on the stock it will be gorgeous.

Very nice, did you accent the lettering for the photos or came like that? Get rid of the accent, not standard.
Personally I would put a red Pacmayr Old English recoil pad on rather than go for an aftermarket butt plate, which will help with recoil, protect the stock when resting in the field and also prevent the rifle slipping over when standing.

Original buttplate is easy to fix with black coloured Acraglass, i have done similar works many times. Third number pair (36) stamped in barrel would tell the twist of barrel in millimeters, one millimeter is 0,03936 inc.

Thank you all for viewing the photos of my rifle and for those of you that commented your comments.

Igorrock, The last number I think is a 360 (though there is a gap between the 36 and the 0) which would come out to one turn in 14.17323". I will confirm this later in the day with a patched cleaning rod, marking the number of inches of rod travel to make one rotation.

Casper50, I have fixed the link to the reproduction buttplate seller, I think.

eagle27, The character highlighting is done by the use of a product called Lacquer Stick, which I purchased from Brownells Gunsmith Supplies. They're sold for this purpose and come in white and black and are useful for markings to stand out in photographs but are easily removed with a bit of solvent.

Iowa 303, What do you recommend for the stock? I don't wish to do any sanding and steaming the dents will probably damage the existing finish.

In the 3rd photo there appears to be 2 areas on the heel that have either tape residue or the finish is missing and the finish on the toe is scuffed.
Just a touch up of these 2 areas to protect the wood is all it needs.
The dents and dings are its history and in my opinion should not be removed.
Igorrock is correct with the accraglas buttplate repair.it works very well.
You have a very nice rifle there. I am envious!

Yes, 14" sounds much better than my over-tight 36 mm.

Thank you for the advice Iowa 303. It does appear that tape was on the butt at one point. I could give the stock a wipe down with some pure BLO. I think I chucked the tung oil I had as it gummed up before using it all.

What did they say for new 1903 Springfield stocks and BLO? Once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year?

Vlad, your horn buttplate is a generic contemporary German type, but not the original Mauser one. Larry Schuknecht, http://www.dutchmanwoodworks.com offered very good reproductions of the original ones with the Mauser banner logo, indistinguishable from the originals. You may contact him

Nice, I have one very similar, made in 1924. It has seen a bit more use than yours, but still seems to shoot well. The recoil with a 286gr projectile and the buttplate is a bit too much, but a slip on limbsaver makes all the difference. It does make for a very long length of pull, but I am 6'5" so works well.

I have read that this cartridge was created for the use of settlers in German East Africa; true?

stug, I have not yet loaded for or shot this rifle but my experience is that in load development, off the bench, the 9MM through 9.5MM with a 250 grainish slug are punishing but the same load is not felt when taking the shot in the field. Off the bench I do use a "limb saver" also.

Old Glass, I have read of this also.

The original ammo, according to John Taylor, projected both 286gr. solids and soft points at 2,175fps. Taylor said the increase to 2,360fps was not necessary as the original killed all the large dangerous game quite effectively, I suspect due to good bullets.

2,175fps is easily accomplished with a 286gr. bullet in the 9.3x57 chambered in a Husky Model 96/94 Mauser.

Where Taylor found his "2175 fps" data is a mystery to me.In the 1920s four 9.3x62 factory loads were listed in German catalogs. These are the same as the pre-WW1 loads:
285 gr round nose at 2230 fps
258 gr H-jacket at 2296 fps
231 gr round nose at 2379 fps
188 gr pointed sp at 2625 fps

By 1934 DWM listed these:
285 gr rn at 2362 fps
231 gr rn at 2523 fps
231 gr pointed sn at 2543 fps
285 gr strong jacket round nose at 2382 fps
262 gr rn boat tail strong jacket at 2497 fps

RWS 1940:
285 gr rn at 2329 fps
258 gr H-jacket at 2597 fps
As you see, some of these loads were just as powerful than the .350 Rigby Magnum, 225 at 2600.

Yes, but only with modern powders, not the fast burning ones available pre-WW1. And, you are doing the same with the 9.3x57 Taylor complained about what the German factories did to the 9.3x62: Increasing the velocity without regard to sighting.

Yes, developed by the Berlin gunmaker Otto Bock in 1905. Quickly adopted by Mauser as a factory chambering. Similar to the then British medium bores, but without needing an expensive Magnum length action.

My 9.3x57 shot group centres 1" over the front sight with the 270gr. Speer SRN's running 2,300fps, 286 Norma and 293gr. TUG's at 2,200fps shot to the sights, and 300gr. re-sized Hornady RN's at 2,175fps shot 1" low - about a 3 1/2" circle.
Not bad for a rifle built in 1929
All shooting at 100yards.
Currently, with the 3 - 9 x32 scope, they all drop into a 2 1/2" circle.
Seems to me, my 9.3x62 Mauser does not shoot as consistently with all bullet weights as this Husky 9.3x57 does.
