making 6,5x53R brass
      #264282 - 27/04/15 10:28 PM

my 6,5x54MS die set( a 6,5x53R rimless) came today and so I start making 6,5x53R out of 303 Brit military brass. I was feeling - after years of reloading you have it in the finger tips - and seeing the shoulder of the 303 brass was a little bit brittle so first step was full length with a 308 Winchester die. this sets the shoulder back and was than followed by a 6,5x57 full length die for giving the neck a good start.

from left to right
303
303 shoulder collapsed
fl resized in 308 Win.
fl resized in 6,5x57
fl resized in 6,5x54MS
cut to 53,5mm
original 6,5x53R

this way I lost only one other case from 150 when the neck was sticking in the die

hope this could help, you can take a 6,5x55 FL die also

Well done. The 20 degree shoulder of the .308 prevented the crushing of the .303's sharp shoulder. This was a very important step.

In the same line of thinking, I now use a shortened .17Rem die for initial necking of .22 Hornet's to .17Cal. for my .17AH's.

Very nice.
I have correct brass for my 6.5s but one guy I know prefers to use resized 303 brass.
Maybe just based on cost and availability and done as you have, is a very good option.

actually this startet with 1600 RWS 6,34mm Berdan primer I had no other use than looking for 303 military brass because this is the only brass for this primer size. Sarg send me the cases from new zealand around the world just to play dandy here

Don't forget to anneal the neck & shoulder areas, otherwise all that good work may go out the window on first firing!

By the way, Bertram Brass does make the 6.5x53R with the correct head stamp. However well done Lancaster, your cases seem to have come out very well.

He used military 303 as a way to use his primer cache. Ha! Makes sense!
Turned out good, Lancaster. Ive heard Winchester brass can be run straight into the 6.5x54 die?

Anyone try that?

maybe seems strange but my berdan cases are worth more than boxer cases. its the only way to use the berdan primer I have and berdan primed brass became more and more rare.
I bought 100 once fired 8x57IS military cases just to use my 5,5mm berdan primer.
resizing the 303 brass without anealing will be a hopeless game not to mention the fact this brass had a 1957 headstamp and was brittle only by the years it have seen.
think Winchester 303 is made by Sellier&Bellot, I have some of this cases and you can form 6,5x53R without problems. my 303 military brass have a very thick base, maybe 11,56mm so I turn it down to 11,43mm on the lathe. this is the base diameter of the 6,5x54MS die.

Thank you for the Thank you Lancaster, I had no idea you were going to make 6.5X53R out of them, a LOT of work has gone into those case's

Yes I found the head a bit large on Exmil case's, new unfired Rem or Win is much easier I think, more so if trying to load in a sporter that may have a tighter chamber !

I don't lose any if I sneak into my mates reloading shop & use all his dies from 308Win, 7mm/08, 260 then into 6.5X54 dies, boy do they shoot great in my Gibbs, the barrel is like brand new as I don't think it has been shot much if at all, unfortunately it has no bolt & I use the one from my Exmil Steyr !

Always great to read your posts, thanks again !

Cases made from .303 will be just a few thou wider across the rim, which doesn't matter a hoot in the rifle action or chamber, but in my experience will eventually slacken the charger clips to the point where they require constant bending and never seem to be quite right thereafter.

Having said that, its what I use in mine, with perseverance, and a little cussing occasionally...
Just doesn't seem worth it to turn a couple of thou off each rim.

This is an interesting post. Something that makes a radical re-sizing operation more successful is to utilize the seating dies as forming dies. Simply remove the seating stem and use the die as a sizer. Doing this, I was able to transform .444 Marlin brass into 7x57R brass with little difficulty.

I make 6.5X53R Dutch using 3 dies.

I push the shoulder back with a 7.35 Carcano FL die made by RCBS. The base is larger than some other brands so it does not squash the heads undersize.

Then I form the neck down to .299 using a Pacific 6.5 Carcano trim die.

Make sure you leave the shoulder about .005 to .010 long with the Carcano dies.

Then I form in a 6.5X53R trim die and cut off the case with a trimmer or in a lathe.
I fit the head to shoulder length exactly to my rifle's chamber so it effectively headspaces on the shoulder.

From here I can neck size with a 6.5X55 FL die.

For normal reloading I use RCBS 6.5X53R dies. My dies are about .452 to .453 at the head which is a good close fit to my chamber.

6.5X54 MS dies are closer to .448 at the base and do not work for me in spite of what others say.

so its done
brass trimmed, base lathe turned, neck and shoulder again anealed

see the brass became very hard again after I swage it down so anealing it again was necessary. little bit fireforming will be anyway because the 303 should is smaller than the .256 Mannlicher.

use my old 12 ga RCBS die set for primming, is just a toolbox for doing anything you can not do with the common stuff. to bad they dont make this dies anymore.

Looking good Lancaster, as I said before a lot of work done on those cases, seems strange to see CAC (Colonial, Ammunition, Co) head stamp in far off Germany, 100yrs-75yrs ago I would be shot for suppling ordnance

The US will not even send me a 5 shot magazine for a 80yr .22 Winchester bolt action, yet they (with Australian help ?) sent Small Arms & ammunition (including Rocket launchers) to Syrian Rebels, which have now turned into ISIS, so supplied Terrorists !

Ok to send Military Weapons to nice safe peaceful Middle Eastern Terroists, but not send a mag for a Bunny Gun down to War Mongering Crazy Kiwis !
