Good question.

I don't know what you mean by "traditonal calibers" but I'll have a first crack at it until
you qualify the meaning. Are you thinking "English" traditional or just pre 1930 calibres ?

My personal preference would be
275 Rigby (7x57), 375H&H and a 500 Nitro in a double

I've shot game with all of these and they all work with the 375H&H being able to do the
275 Rigby and 500 Nitro work if it's in your hands.

IMHO, this combo have enough bullet weight variations to provide a range
and 500 Nitro gives alot more punch than a 450/470 and enough punch all over for elephant
but without lugging TOO much weight around.

CHANGES - At the lower end I would PREFER a 30 cal as I believe 30 cal is
far superior to 7mm. However I didn't know if "traditonal calibers" included 30-06
or not.

500 Nitro

I wasn't specific enough, but pre 1930 sounds good to me. Worldwide Calibers

...my vote would go for an original .416 rigby in a turnbolt action, or a 9.3x74r in any uk or continental double...

My pick would be:
1. 30-06 Bolt Action Model 70 crf(Deer to elk & plains game)
2. 375 HH Bolt Action Model 70 crf(Brown Bear, elk in timber large plains game & dangerous game under good conditions)
3. 470 double (when the chips are down & dirty dangerous game..........bear hunting in timber & thick cover just for fun )

Add to that a 22 rimfire & you'd be set for life. But only having 4 rifles would be boring LOL

I'm assuming you mean NitroX ?

I tend to agree but would be interested in your thoughts.

500nitro,

My guess is that Alan (4seventy) thinks the 470NE should be NitroX 3rd choice instead of the 450NE.

As for the original question;

30-06 (M98), 375H&H (M98), 470NE (double) would be a good blend, with ammo available pretty much everywhere.

or just the 375H&H. Good enough for any game on earth both big and small! (although not as a stopper...)

ErikD,

If Ammo availability was a criteria, yes, your choice is a very good one which I agree with
however I don't think it was a factor to take into account / I didn't take it into account.

I chose the 500 Nitro as it does have more stopping / shocking power than a 450 / 470
(when bullet is NOT placed in the correct place) at the same time as not having the weight
of gun to carry of a 600 Nitro (which of course is another step up altogther).

However alot of other factors can come into play - are we hunting in 2005 or 1920 !!!

In PURELY Romantic terms, a Rigby 450 NE would have to be THE Classic 450 cal.

I sound so much like an Anglophile it's sick !!!

500 Nitro,

Since the question was:

In reply to:

What do you all think would be a good all around battery of traditonal calibers and rifles to be suited to hunt everything from deer to elephant??

I kind of felt that traditional caiburs that can be used for the above hunting today would be the most relevant answer. And thus, availability is something that should be taken into account!

I could be happy with a 6.5 Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine and a .400 nitro double, with a 12-bore shotgun thrown in.

I could be even happier with an additional .303 Lee Speed, a .22 repeater, a .470 double, a .577, a 12-bore Paradox, a Kurz Mauser.......

I'm starting to become more and more familiar and comfortable with my double rifle and it's three barrels.
7x65R
9.3x74R
470
I think I could manage to get along with just them if that was my only option.
I just need to fine tune the 7x65R a little more and I would be all set.

I think my choice would be:

Savage '99 in .25/300 or .300

Mauser '98 in 9.3x62

Mauser '98 in .404 Jeffry

Win M70 (Pre-64) in .30-06

I choose these because people actually used them (chamberings)in significant numbers. And they worked! The Savage is just prettier than the Win '94. And a better rifle: balance, mechanism, ability to use sharp pointed bullets.

For the doubles, it would have to include 9.3x74R, 450/400, 470. After the British state banning .450 in Africa and India, I guess these were the most commonly used rifles. Type of double?

Greener, top bolted, as in his book: The Gun & its' Development.

I own 2 Savage 99s. Both pre WWII models. They are by far the greatest lever action hunting rifle around Both of mine are open sighted with no holes drilled for scopes. One of them has an old Redfield receiver sight. Both are 300 savages. What a great deer/ blackbear catridge. Good pick!

This would be my "traditional" rifle:

John Rigby & Co., .350 Rigby Magnum; this and my Ruger M7722 Allweather will do it for me.

IB,

I always wanted one of the Savages and, last year, found one in .300 in a gun shop up here.......shop owner said it was a very early specimen of the 99. I went home, went back the next day to get it, and he had sold it. "He who hesitates................", eh? Nice pair you've got there.

Good grief ovis, that is a beautiful rifle! How's finding brass for it up here?

I guess a traditional battery for me would be
16 gauge shotgun
7x57mm
318 WR
375 H&H
470 Nitro

There is some overlap there, but how could you not include a 318 or 333 or a 350 (like ovis' rifle)?

DPhillips,

Thanks..........kind of lucked into that one a while back.
I've got some Bertram brass but haven't gotten my dies yet.
I'm waiting for info on the guns background. The action was made in Oberndorf in 1903.....waiting to find out who it was built for and in what year. I'd like one just like it in .275 Rigby(7mm) but probably won't find one I can afford.

Joe

A friend of mine has one of those as well. I have yet to see it but his was in more or less pristine condition.

A lovely rifle you have there.

I remember I think it was the "Hatari Times" had a article about a lady who had a .275 Rigby and a .350 Rigby Magnum as her African battery. A great pair.

What about metric calibres eg Mauser 66 with 6.5X68 and 9.3x64 barrels, spare bolt and trigger group and a bolt in 500 Jeffrey, and, if you count the Mauser as one rifle, a 12ga/9.3x74R drilling.

In fact the drilling could do everything from mice with a 22LR insert using shot loads to ele with the 320gn Woodleigh solid.

John,

Thanks and your memory is correct on the Hatari Times article; it was about the Seth-Smith rifles.....I had always wanted one in .275 Rigby(being a Corbett fan) but this one popped up and my wife bought it for me(Yeah, she's a keeper). The stock has seen some wear but the bore is very bright.

.243win/.375H&H/.460wby mag. and a s/s 12ga shotgun for the hell of it.
