Sheep & Grizzly Camp........Brook's Range
      #24210 - 15/01/05 06:27 PM

Base Camp

Base camp, from the bluff

Dry sow grizzly, wet from several creek crossings

Same grizzy, last look, still wet

Dall's ram headgear

Then the weather changes, and so does everything else.

These pics are from the 2004 season. We were in the bush for six weeks this year, had decent weather for a change........well until the end of August........then the snow.......but no complaints here....wouldn't change any of it for anything. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Joe

Wharf,

Glad you like the pictures. This past season the temps ranged from 12F-80+F......a little warmer on the top end than in the past. At 11:00AM, two days ago, a spot south of that area had temps of -65F with a windchill of -89F. The coldest temps during hunting season, while I've been in there was 6F, but usually it's warmer than that.......great area to hunt.

Joe

Nice ram. What were the bases and lengths? Can you shoot any ram or does it have to be full curl or mature? Are you limited to one harvest in a set number of years? And one last question, what is your rifle chambered for?

Not sure which unit ovis was hunting in, but most places in the state require the ram to be full curl or better, or 8 years old. There are a few (maybe one?) units where any ram is legal and there are drawing permits for ewes in a few units.

All open areas allow the harvest of one ram per year by a hunter. Of course, places are drawing units where you have to drawn for a permit, but most areas are open. Some grizzly areas are allowing 2 grizzlies per year now. These are the areas that the moose have hammered pretty hard by bears and wolves.

Can't answer what ovis' rifle is chambered for, but the tent looks like a Kifaru to me.

Adam,

DPhillips was right on with the regs. This ram was not full curl but was over eight years old......the deep curl back would have required this ram to have a lot more length to attain the full curl..........bases on this ram were thirteen and change, if I recall, and I don't remember the length(don't have my journal here). The ram was atken by a client with a .270. The rifle that I took with me last year was my .375Ultra w/270gr handloads........I deal mostly w/the bears but if I do sheep up there I'll take my .350RM which is also a great round for the Grizzly......
