Express sights
      #21076 - 22/11/04 02:07 AM

I am new to this board. I do not have a lot of experience with expresss rifles either.

I have an old Whitworth express rifle in .458. It has a three leaf express sight and the leaves fold down when the gun is fired. aparently the spring is not strong enough to hold it engaged. Any ideas? I have considered a drop of epoxy at the base. since I doubt that I will fold them or have a need to change ranges.

Also what was the sight picture suposed to be on those guns. Was the bead suposed to be nestled into the notch, or was the bead suposed to be at the same height as the top of the leaves? The gun shoots low even with the 300 yard leaf if you nestle the bead. I also noticed how slender the post is above the base and wondered if that was to give you more vision around it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks again

The spring can be replaced by most any good gunsmith. That would take care of the leaf problem.

It sounds as though you need a higher front sight. Again, talk to a good smithy, and he should be able to take care of that for you.

DickJones,

Welcome to the forum.

Until you are able to get to a gunsmith, a small amount of thick grease will
often be enough to hold up the leaf sights. It has worked for me on some
guns in the past.

Was the bead suposed to be nestled into the notch ? - I have always worked
on this principle but that is not to say some guns were wighted in with the
bead at the same height as the top of the leaves.

I find if you always have the bead nestled into the notch, you get a consistent
sight picture, where as you can have slight variations with the bead at the same
height as the top of the leaves

Hope this helps.

The reason I wondered is that the gun shoots low even with the 300 Yd. leaf. It did occur that since the post was so slim, the intent may have been to put the top of the post even with the top of the vee. The ramp then comes up to the bottom of the vee. I believe it would not be a hard sight picture to hold elevation with. I have extensive experience with aperature sights (Old Hi Power shooter) and wondered if that type of sight picture was intended. It would allow you to see the target better than nestling the bead in the notch.

The heavy grease does sound like it might work. I'll try that.
