Express sights

I am new to this board. I do not have a lot of experience with expresss rifles either.

I have an old Whitworth express rifle in .458. It has a three leaf express sight and the leaves fold down when the gun is fired. aparently the spring is not strong enough to hold it engaged. Any ideas? I have considered a drop of epoxy at the base. since I doubt that I will fold them or have a need to change ranges.

Also what was the sight picture suposed to be on those guns. Was the bead suposed to be nestled into the notch, or was the bead suposed to be at the same height as the top of the leaves? The gun shoots low even with the 300 yard leaf if you nestle the bead. I also noticed how slender the post is above the base and wondered if that was to give you more vision around it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks again
