Cogswell and Harrison

Someone I work with showed me a gun that his father handed down to him. At first it looked like a Parker Hale because of the action, but the only markings I saw was on the barrel: Cogswell and Harrison 168 Piccadilly, London; on the bolt release:37; and the serial number: low 600's. The story goes that his mother bought it for his father (all wives take notice) in 1965, used, for $700. It is chambered in 8x57 JS. Does anyone have any info on this maker and their rifles? Thanks in advance.

Tom,
I beg to differ regarding your comment on prices.

C&H prices are quite a bit lower than those of H&H for similar types of gun (at least in the UK, Australia, NZ, USA & Canada).

Webley

Webley

What would the price range be for this firearm? There is very little wear, but to me it looks like the stock was checkered some time after it had left the factory. I know you may be apprehsive about offering an opinion without seeing the gun, so be conservative. Thanks

Adam

Webley,
my catalog is from 1999 and they start at 40.800 British Pounds for a .300 caliber
the .470 starts at 41.000, the .577 at 50.000

When I say the same category I meant that even if they are cheaper than H&H, they are still far out of range what most of us can affort.

Well, they are not out of range when it comes to look and handle. I´ve been in London at H&H and when I told them that I cannot affort one, they opened their doors and asked me to try the gun I want. It was a nice feeling having one of this beauties in the hands, "worth a house"

Tom,
As Adam’s posting was referring to a second hand rifle I assumed your comments regarding prices also related to the second hand market.

The difference in second hand value between H&H and C&H guns is proportionally much greater than the difference between the new prices (at any point in time).

Glad to hear you had chance to have a good look in the H&H gunroom.

A couple of weeks ago I was able to inspect a double 4 bore rifle from the H&H ‘museum’. Very inspiring with nearly all of it's original finish.

Adam,
Have you contacted C&H to see if they have any record of your friend’s gun?

Try info@cogswell.co.uk
Or http://www.cogswell.co.uk

For information on the firm a good place to look is the ‘Internet Gun Club’ (Historical database section). http://www.internetgunclub.com/general/history.php

This is an excellent website.

As regards actual value – well that depends on your local market. In general, although it would be worth far more than a similar grade/condition Parker-Hale rifle (even if it was actually made by P-H) the price would be a little nearer to P-H than H&H.

Regards
Webley

I have bought and sold a number of big bore bolt actions by Cogswell and Harrison...They are not a partically fine old firearm by comparison to Rigby or H&H, but they are good using guns and I much prefer them to any of the modern factory guns of today...Value of a good bolt action Cogswell and Harrison in 375 is about $1500.00. In the smaller calibers they usually bring about $500 less...

I know some sell for a lot more on rare ocassions but that is because some folks just think because its and old English rifle its worth mega bucks, but that won't be the case when they try to get rid of it...

Again, they are nice old rifles built on milsurp M-98 action, most have aluminun bottom metal and they are very plebium, and were made for the trade..

They did make a few high grade guns and these bought a lot more money..The are engraved and very nice rifles..They also made some high grade shotguns, which I never cared for btw...
