Boar killed...
      #178643 - 09/04/11 10:01 PM

Today was a good day: From walking the city streets of Darwin with my lovely wife, to meeting-up for a yarn and a cuppa with member Mog, and finally to getting-out into the scrub near home. I hiked into a bait from earlier in the week, and spied this boar feeding on it. I made it to a rest at 50m, but thought I might try to get closer. I made it to 30m, and the rascal lay down and went to sleep, disappearing. Despite the shorter grass, I could not see him. I made it to 20m, and could just make-out his form. One 410 grain RNSN Woodleigh from the Born Again .416 Rigby did the trick. The boar never moved. He looked to be a fighter, with a well-ripped ear. We have hardly any pigs in this vicinity compared to other parts of the Territory, and what few we do have are hit so hard by keen doggers. So the few that are around are like ghosts, and just to see one is a treat for the hunter on foot. The hard yards on foot paid-off, but I couldn't have done it without the bait. Cheers, Ben

G'day Mate,

Glad to finally meet you and have a coffee. Have to do dinner and a few beers next time! I am so stoked that the baits paid off. That is one cracker of a pig I love it! You have certainly put in some yards in the last couple of months to get the Donks and this guy.

How did the 416 go against the hog?

Catch you when you are next up here.

Regards,

MOG

Hi Ben,

I'm sorry to say somehow I missed that one, as you know I will always leave a comment as you know.

Did you take the tusks for mounting or are you past that with the number of animals you have shot?? In all my years I only got 1 good set of tusks for the effort and that was when I was up your way on 2007 and have them on a shield, it's just that they look bigger under the microscope...just joking.

Cheers for now Mate,

Jeff

Ben,

How important is bait for pig hunting in the Territory?

We had a lot of trouble finding pigs further South where they are more scarce, and I believe baiting is the only way to get better numbers, other than chancing upon them. Hard to do in a single week of course.

On the coast, where sometimes large herds can be found, on the other hand sometimes one runs into a hundred at a time.

JH

IMO - away from the floodplains and not using dogs, it is imperative for good success!

BTW - that place you hunted to the south - we shot 30 pigs off that on one day a couple years back and their numbers were increasing but you wouldnt see them without something dead to draw them out of the long grass and thick shit.

Thanks, fellows.

Without bait, there is no way I would've got this fellow. There is so much water around.

In the better pig country (floodplains, big swamp systems closer to the coast), there is no need to bait, and one can still have good success (although baits are stumbled upon in the course of these hunts, often).

Later in the year, when the water dries-up, the nature of the land in this area is such that it will still be hard to find the few ghost pigs there are, so bait will continue to be important here. For a fellow fitting-in hunts around work, it can be hard to time it just right, and often I'm either too early or too late. There is no mathematical formula for when a bait might be hit. This one took over three days (I got him on the sixth). One bait took two weeks! Others have taken just two days.

As for penetration, well, there was no exit. The boar was slightly quartering on, and laying down asleep. The bullet hit at the base of the neck. I've had pass-throughs on the last few side-on donkeys I've killed, but sometimes I find that the humble pig can soak-up what is (from previous experience) quite a buffalo killer. I didn't do an autopsy, but I imagine some fair-sized bone was encountered. I'll go back and get the teeth later.

Yeah, Neale, I think a .505 Gibbs is required.

Cheers,

Ben
