I have heard (maybe a rumor) that the CZ 550 stocks on big bores tend to split. Is this a rumor, or has anyone substantiated this statement?

I have a ZKK602 in 375H&H that has been used many years. It finally split at the recoil lug. Glassbedded it and it's still performing well. I have a new 550 in 416 Rigby and it has one crossbolt a better barrel recoil lug and grooving on bottom of action to better grip the wood and better recoil lug bedding. I don't really see how you could greatly improve on it. Only thing I might do is glass it.

Rusty,
I bought a new 550 in 416 Rigby in 2000. As usual, I properly tightened all screws, then shot the rifle. After 8 rounds the stock cracked just below the bolt. I took the action out of the stock and found that the recoil lug area was badly cracked, also.
When I sent it back to the warranty station in Kansas, the tech told me that they were prone to this and to glass the recoil lug area of the replacement stock. I did and had no further problems.

I have a Brno 602 in .375 H&H with a custom stock fitted but I plan to cross bolt it. I do not know why the stock was replaced in the first place, but maybe it cracked as well. I looked around and found a company that makes laminated cross bolted CZ 550 Magnum Express stocks. Take a look at www.brockmansrifles.com if you are interested.

It's definitely no rumor as there are numerous threads documenting the wrist or mag well areas cracking here and on the AR forums. Evidently, the bedding isn't tight enough (cost cutting measure?) and the action gets a running start at the wood. In fact, to shortstop it in any rifle, at least glass it. Better yet, pillar and glass it.

My father-in-law has a 550 in 9.3x62 that I shout quite a lot. I know the Recoil is not near that of the .375 or .416, should I consider glassing the stock as a preventive measure?
Buy the wy the IMHO the 550 is a great gun for $.

I know of a few guys who shoot the 9.3 in the CZ. One or two left it stock and the others just glassed it without the cross-bolts. I don't think the stocks will crack under the 9.3's recoil but there's no harm in glassing the stock, it may shoot even better. In fact, in a little while, I'm going to pillar and glass all my RSM's just so that I'll have rock solid platform from which to launch my rounds. As to the pillar bedding, the benefits are that you can never over-compress the wood over time whenever you take the barreled action out of the stock.

I was warned of this I took it seriously,my 375 CZ is bedded,"glassed" now, I got it last friday back. I have done several rifles myself, but this I gave to gunsmith,as it is more complicated to bed properly.
