Training a young GSP / pointer pup
      #97623 - 25/02/08 04:10 PM

I have to dig out my training books especially for a really young pup ie obedience etc.

But what are some games which are good for a young - 9 week or older - puppy to engage in.

I try to avoid things that will create bad habits later. Don't let them play and bite shoes too much, don't play tug-of-war with them. I used to let my previous dog, rip some old sheets, by wrapping him up in them and it took him a while to disengage and then bite them. Never did much with our clothes in later life, but used to tear up his own bedding when he got bored.

Blitzen as mentioned is doing well with fetching. A bit less well than a week a go. He is encouraged to STAY when the toy is thrown, then told to FETCH, and to COME BLITZEN back to me. Does that quite well still. Then GIVE to release the toy. Then lots of PRAISE. SITTING before he gets his food is encouraged as well.

He is getting new experiences. Taken out for a drive in the 4WD when changing taps for the irrigation. Short walks in paddock to the pump house and similar.

I think he is starting learn his name. So he is still young so I don't expect too much. Just letting him have fun and setting the ground work for later training.

I might shoot a rabbit to skin for its fur, and after freezing it to get rid of fleas, let him play with that, or use it to mark a scent trail for him to discover and follow if he is able???

Fighting and biting is his main two pursuits at the moment. Looking for things to occupy his brain other than those two excellent puppy pleasures.

What other games that are fun for a young pointer puppy do you guys and girls use?

I guess you are giving him his food always on the same place - next time you hide his bowl and drip the food (soup, milk...) from the regular place towards bowl and let him find his dish by himself - not too long at first you may prolong it by the time according to his progress. Also when out in the field try some hide and seek - take advantage when he will not be concentrated on you and hide behind the tree and let him find you...

Mine had to sit before even getting petted/praised. I always make a big fuss, now she automatically goes to the heel sit and wags furiously until petted no matter who visits. Since she learned so young she never jumps on anyone or on their car. Leash training ASAP and teach him 'no' asap as well. Speaking of cars, get him going for rides.

Can you get some game bird wings for him to play with? My lab loves to search for chicken eggs. She carries them whole for awhile before eating them.

At this young age teach him to mind things you don't want him attacking. If you have livestock and chickens, etc, expose him to them now. I bet he can begin an interest even in blood trailing.

And just make it all fun for him!

john if you shoot a few bunnies, bleed them out and use that for short tracks, and place the skin there at the end of the track, at his age just a few yards maybe with a turn around a corner or something like that, do not use the skin to make the track. you wont get him off the bunnies again.

to half a litre of blood(bunnie or deer) ad 4-5 tablespoons of salt before you freeze it then i will be fresh when you defrost it. always have a stock of this in the freezer when you are training a young pup. great for training and fun for the dogs.

cheers

Peter,

please explain? Do you mean he will track rabbits all the time if a skin is used? Rabbits will be one of the most hunted game animals on the farm.

As for blood, shooting a hare will get me some in good quantity, plus the next deer or three. Good ideas.

Ann,

Good idea.

Will try him out soon on the leash. NO is well underway.

Can easily shoot some pigeons.

OK sheep are always an issue. Time for some exposure to sheep AND the leash.

Mouse,

Good idea.

My previous dog dig this for US! After eating he used to hide his bowl, like burying a bone. At first it was easy, just lying under a bush. Then it started to get half-buried. He didn't like us finding it. Until eventually he would bury in maybe 30 cms under ground and the only way to find it was to look for disturbed ground.

Another good idea. Used to do this with the previous dog as well and he enjoyed it even as an adult dog.

Everyone, Thanks for some good ideas.

He walks OK on the leash but of course thinks it is great to put in his mouth and tug on. I think he is too young to use a choker chain on.

Now that I have started to train him to SIT properly, it is evident the breeder already has taught him that quite well. We noticed this when we first got him.

It's a pity it is vintage and a busy time, so time spent of him will only be available in between busy times. But as he is very young should not be a problem. On the plus, once harvesting is out the way, there is lots of free time before pruning, weed spraying, winter cover cropping etc starts later in Autumn/Winter.

get the blood work up and running first so he learns to focus on the job at hand, then let him play with bunnies. he will always be abel to track fur because it is in his blood. but if you want him to be abel to go that blood track with out disturbence he needs to learn to focus on that first.

so in my book its blood first, when he shows you that he got the idea, then fur.

cheers

Picked up my new pup in Victoria the other day, beautiful bloke, father was a GWP, mother a GSP, he's taken to the father, took no time to get him used to the lead, very intelligent as well. Definitely going to snake train him.

cheers

Have not read all the responses on here as I am in a bit of a hurry today..but some things I used to do with my German Wirehairs was put a bird wing on a fishing pole..let them try to catch it and then after a bit slow it down and let them go on point...at that time you could encourage them to hold a strong point..

another thing I used to do is tie a bird wing onto a dummy and then while out walking toss it upwind without the dog seeing you do it...circle back and let the dog pick up the scent..see how well he does at that...

Finally I also used to buy pigeons and place them out in a field as the dog got older..have the dog on a long check cord..as he closes in keep watch he goes on a staunch point..you can encourage it with a slight tug of the cord...

Those are some that worked well for me..good luck
