How much time in Africa??
      #95855 - 03/02/08 06:41 PM

I was just going through an old Diary and started thinking about how much non hunting time I have spent in Africa.

My Hunting Days pale in comparison to non hunting days, perhaps 30 to 1 or more.

I am going to sit down and add it all up one of these days.

Now I have worked in African for about 4 years, that is why it is skewed, but I think even if I remove that time the numbers are still large. Typically a 3 month trip will be around 20 plus days of hunting and the rest 'hanging around and being a tourist.

Anyone else want to try and figure it out?

Last year I did 263 days of actual hunting, of the rest, a lot of time was also spend preparing for hunts/ scouting areas, driving to and from hunting areas. But then, its my job, and I live here. I hunted a total of 5 days for myself or with my family.

"Typically a 3 month trip will be around 20 plus days of hunting and the rest 'hanging around and being a tourist."

Does that mean that you take holidays that arn't all hunting ?? What on earth do you do.

Absolutely. Africa is a long way to go just to spend all your time in a tent in the bush. I really enjoy renting a vehicle and exploring the countryside. I've driven from Windhoek to Vic Falls across the Caprivi Strip, self drove for a week on the Skeleton coast with another friend (we rented two cruisers)

All around RSA, Zambia, Zim. Malawi Moz.

It would be like the everything you knew about Canada came from a hunting area for Moose in British Columbia.

Spot on, Mickey, only let me add; "...and then paraded around like you were an expert in Canadian political economy..."

Sadly, and pathethically, I found in my travels some of the most ignorant {of national and local affairs} people I met were foreign tourist hunters. That was years ago. I hope things have changed.

As for myself, I have little hunting experience in Africa, really.

1980: Kenya & Congo {then Zaïre}; 42 days, hunting about 4.

1988: All throughout RSA {5,500 km car rental}; 30 days with one highpoint being a day touring the Musgrave Mauser plant in Bloemfontein, OVS!

1989: RSA {mostly Transvaal and Kwazulu-Natal}; 8 months, week hunting with the highpoint being the birth of my son in Grey's Hospital in Maritzburg!

I've spent about 160 days in sub-Saharran Africa with about a quarter of them hunting. 1988, 1993, 2002, and 2006. Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.

I agree you don't pick up much what a place is like if flying in and picked up at the airport, hunting with an outfitter and then returned to the airport. Insulated from the locals. The extra days are often quite an experience especially if one travels 'solo'.

I would have spent more time hunting if I could afford it though.
