I've spent about 160 days in sub-Saharran Africa with about a quarter of them hunting. 1988, 1993, 2002, and 2006. Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.
I agree you don't pick up much what a place is like if flying in and picked up at the airport, hunting with an outfitter and then returned to the airport. Insulated from the locals. The extra days are often quite an experience especially if one travels 'solo'.
I would have spent more time hunting if I could afford it though.
