Sako Safari Grade ported?

I recently traded into a Sako Safari Grade in 375. It appears to have been factory ported, and I think it is a later production.

I have seen several others in the past. What I believe are older production didn't have porting. One that I believe to be a later gun has the exact same porting as mine.

I would appreciate any information regarding these guns. I like the way mine cuts a single hole, but am a bit concerned in the way it doesn't pick up the next round easliy when operating the bolt. My friend's has the same tendancy...

The porting has taken just a bit of edge off the sharpness of the recoil and seems to keep the muzzle down a bit. I don't use compensators or porting on my rifles, but kind of like the way this one works.

I am not aware that Sako installed/machined any type of a muzzle break as a factory proposition. As far as the feeding of the cartridges go, this can be expected and should be corrected by a competent gunsmith who is familiar with this type of problem. Every bolt gun I own, I repeat every, has been fine tuned in the feeding department. This is the area that I want to be sure is perfect.

Yep, I agree with having the tweaking done by a good smith. Aren't you close to a couple of good smiths?

I'll take it to Lee Baker, a pretty good bolt rifle smith, and Lee LeBas' associate. LeBas' business is called L&L, imagine that...

I think part of the problem is that I am so used to those sloppy bolt Mausers and pre 64 Winchesters that the feel and operation of this push feed gun is a bit different. It definitely requires absolutely full bolt travel, under no uncertain terms.

I became a bit too delicate with the bolt operation a few years ago when I was chambering a second round fast in an older Rem 721 30-06 I had just taken in. We were shooting 'yotes and had three running hell bent. I slammed the bolt back for a fast second shot and sheared off the bolt stop, thumb right in my eye...

I'll still have Baker look it over...good advice.

Any more on the porting? Look at the Safari Grade on GunsAmerica...use Sako 375 as a search once there. That pix of the porting could have been taken of my gun, it is so identical.

By the way...mine is a Stoger import. I think all the Safaris may have been, though...?

Remingtons are a paradox

They traditionaly shoot tighter groups right out of the box than the other production rifles in their price class. They have those peeny little tits for extractors and a rather flimsy bolt stop design.

Most Remingtons work well all their hunting lives with no problems, however. I just never quite trust them...

My 721 in 300 H&H has been at my side for 40 years, and has never had problem one...

Maybe if I picked up and shot it once, that would change...
