Indulge me in a bit of fiction
      #85807 - 17/09/07 04:46 PM

Ive been reading African Game Trails (again), and while Im waiting for my double to be finished, I started thinking.... If you were going to join TR on his trip how would you equip yourself?

....Its a new century (20th), and theres been alot of "recent" changes in technology, are you drawn to the new stuff or stay traditional. TR used bolts, doubles, and his lever action, what about you?

Besides the firearms, what else would you bring?

For the year he went (1909) I think TR made some good choices in rifles and cartridges considering what was available. Of course, being an American he wanted to use American made rifles as much as possible. I think that was a big part of his decision to take the .405 Winchester in the Model 1895 even though the .405 was probably not the best medium bore available at the time if British and German cartridges are included in the list of potential cartridges to choose from. The .405 was probably the best American medium bore at the time (but there weren't many to choose from).

Still, if I were to journey back in time and join him in 1909, and funds were not a concern, I think I would choose the following:

Light rifle: 7x57 or 8x57 in an Oberndorf Mauser 98 sporter
Medium: 9.3x62 in an Oberndorf Mauser 98 sporter
Heavy: Either a .450 NE or a .470 NE in a British double rifle

IMHO, that would have been a fairly state-of-the-art battery back in 1909.

Since he and others were also collecting for the Smithsonian Museum, I would take today":

22lr
223 bolt
410 shotgun for small critters and birds for the museum
30-06 bolt
375H&H bolt
Thys DR in 458wm (MINE!)
Matched pair of 12ga shotguns

I could live without the 22lr, the 410 and one of the 12ga's.

I reckon the best thing about a 1909 safari would be the ability to carry a double 8-bore without raising any eyebrows!

Of course, the chance to borrow Teddy's .450 Holland Royal Sidelock for a few shots occasionally would be a nice bonus!

...and never forget that famous quote, after being advised to "just take the 6.5 Mannlicher".....

"...and like Lilly Langtree and the soap, I have used nothing else since!"
