Top lever vs underlever again.....
      #83513 - 04/08/07 01:00 AM

Gents,

BPE rifles, top lever with Greener cross bolt, vs Jones underlever.

As strong as each other, in this situation?

Thanks

Ben

Ben,

Scheiring of Ferlach specializes in hotrod singles and doubles with the underlever for additional rigidity. Here is a review of one in .300 Pegasus--a round with 125% the power of .300 Weatherby.

Hi MS,

Thanks, but i am speaking with reference to older Brit guns most of all, double rifles.

I know most think of the Jones as stronger, but i wondered if a Jones without a third bite, is as strong or more importantly, stronger, than a toplever with a Greener cross-bolt third.

Many thanks

Ben

Unless one clamps the action to a vise and measures the force on the barrel to shear off the bites, we can only speculate.

Suffice to say, both are very strong but are compromise in that the notched lump has square edges and that creates stress risers that can case the lump to break off, and at the same time allowing fast opening.

Merkle, by the way uses a radius on its inner lump.

The greener cross-bolt transfers the load to the best mechanical advantage greatly reducing the stress on the lumps.

If it makes you feel better, virtually all side by sides still use the Purdey double under bite.

Empire,
You might find it interesting that some guns with a Jones underlever have a third bite on the barrel lug. I know of several Holland 8,10,and 12 rifles and paradoxes with this third bite, a dolls head and sideclips.

Thanks chaps,

But the point is precisely related to the above, as gun A is a Jones without third bite of any sort, and gun B is a top-lever with a cross-bolt third bite. There is a little pitting on the cross-bolt hole plate, or whatever it is called, is this worth worrying about at all then? Both are 577 bpe's and in very good condition. One more so internally, one more so externally, latter is dearer, and i want internal cleanliness i.e. bores etc the most.

I am asking merely, if the third bite having some pitting on it etc is great cause for concern, or not.

Many thanks

Ben
