Here's my big concern - what happens when Butch passes on (and it's going to happen someday...)? I'd think the warantee wouldn't be worth much then.

My bet is that his rifles will go up in value the sad day this happens!

I've read in more than a few places on this forum that he's now got about seven people working for him, and a new shop in the Dakotas. Perhaps that mitigates some of this problem.

And hell, who knows? Searcy Rifles might be in existence for a hundred years, and a very respected name then. No one knows for sure.

dnovo,

I feel that Merkels have an unwarranted reputation as clunky and graceless, a bit too 'Germanic' or mass-produced for some. My response is 'ask the man who owns one'....

It think this standard applies to every double rifle (and consumer product for that matter).

I would imagine that the vast majority of Searcy owners are very happy with their rifles. If they were not, I doubt there would be a waiting period of one year of people trying to give Mr. Searcy their hard earned money.

Obviously Mr. Searcy's product fills a niche in the market place. You are a litigator by training/trade, I'm an economist. Opinions vary greatly in their value and relationship to reality, however, one of the few economic truths is "that nobody is smarter that the market place". The "current" market place says that Mr. Searcy's products represent a "good value" ..... in 25, 50, or 100 years, who knows???

I asked Butch that Question (his Death)Since it had bearing on my purtchase. He replied His children are active in the business and he plans on passing it on. I met his son and daughter when I was at his shop. If you call his daughter answers the phone. Being a rookie DR owner I talked to butch and emailed on many occasions over 2 years before I purtachsed. He still had all my emails. And expressed if you have any problems concerns or Questions CALL. I bought my gun off the rack. After a couple of hundred rounds I think the stock is 1/4 In to long . I called and asked if it could be shortened and the cost. Butch said I can have ups pick it up at your door cut and return at no cost within a week. Find another DR manufacture that will do that. Every aspect of the rifle I asked about could be changed to my preference all you have to do is ask. How is the fit finish and handling? I can offhand rapid fire put 2 rounds into a bulleye at 25 yards and cover with a 50c peice reload put 2 more in about a 3 inch total group. Add the scope and make under 2 inch 4 shot groups at 100 yards( on the bench) I would love to have a super engraved fancy H&H or similar.
Can I afford it no . How dead is dead. A Buff does not care what you are carring he wont give you slack if you have nice engraving, wood, blueing ect. Your DR hase to work everytime even if you drop it fall down , get knocked over ect. So give me function before fancy any day(allthough I like Fancy too)
Someone poasted here "when i carry my ###### rifle I am carring history. When I carry my Searcy I am making it.
My ramblings Shannon

For what it is worth this is my experience with Butch Searcy. I found one of his .470 doubles on GunsAmerica.com and contacted him about inspecting it as the owner lives close to his shop. The owner claimed that the gun was only one year old, like new and had never been hunted. He said he found his eye sight was not good enough for open sights so he was selling this gun. I contacted Butch and he confirmed the the rifle was less than a year old and he said he remembered the gun and knew the seller as the guy had shot on Butch's range several times. Butch said he had a standard fee to disassemble, clean, and inspect used guns and would act as an intermediatry for the sale. I came to terms with the seller and he delivered it to Butch. Butch told me the gun was perfect and I sent the money and after it was received Butch sent the gun to my FFL. The gun was packaged very well and the box showed no sign of abuse and I openned the package myself. The gun appeared like new as promised. The upgraded wood was stunningly beautiful but I found that the stock had a very small crack at the tang and the stock was loose. A shipping problem or a known or unknown defect- I'll never know for sure. The gunsmith at my FFL also showed me that the barrels were a little loose (I am no expert but I could feel the play myself.) I also thought the trigger guard was poorly attached. I called Butch and he admitted he never actually inspected, cleaned, or disassembled the gun as he thought he new it well already. He offered to fix the stock and claimed my gunsmith knew little about double rifle barrels and whether they were off the face or not. Needless to say the gun went back and I was nervous until I got my money back. I bought a new Chapuis at the SCI convention in Reno from Cabela. The barrels are tight as can be (almost too tight but I hear they will loosen after some shooting). The gun came with test targets from both machine rest and benchrest. The machine rest target shows a 1 inch group the bench rest shows one and one half inch group. I have been sick and the weather has been bad so I have only shot 20 rounds but have found the gun to be very acurate. This is not a custom made gun like the Searcy but I feel the fit and finish to be superior. The wood is very nice but not as nice as the Searcy. I love the engraving on the Chapuis and feel it is much nicer than on the Searcy. The counterman at my FFL who I know quite well also put me in touch with another of their customers who ordered a Searcy DR, sent it back twice, and finally sold it because it never was right. This guy was not happy with Butch and told me he would never buy another of his rifles.

My views on the wisdom of buying a Searcy are already 'of record' in this thread. However, going to this site and clicking on the thumbnails for this recent Searcy 470 NE in the plain, PH format shows a fairly nice gun, with very decent wood to metal fit, good wood, and all in all, not a bad choice if one was looking for a 470 DR in fairly plain format for a resaonable price without a long wait.

I've seen some really good bust-ups over truly piss-ant subjects. The latest is over shipping Woodleigh bullets to America. Woe be the man who even utters a disparaging word about another's pride-of-possession.

Wrong regarding the "Woodleigh" thread.

I agree there are "bust ups" over people's pride and joys, and as long as it doesn't get personal it is not a big matter. These things happen from time to time, and NE is mostly failry tame and gentlemanly.

However the Woodleigh incident you highlight was not about "someones pride and joy". I personally got involved because the title of the thread and its implications were manifestly and obviously untrue and could have caused commercial damage to the bullet maker. Contacting the maker direct all answers were answered.

On the Searcy topic. And pros and cons.

While not relevant to a USA based customer is there any value to the "warranty" if one buys a rifle in Africa or Australia for example? International shipping is not as easy. Your rifle is away for months, there are all sorts of export and import forms to fill out. And especially annoying if it was to fix manufacturing faults, not repairs from usage.

I think there are three or four Searcy's in Australia that I know of. I haven't heard any problems from any of their owners so that is a plus.

Waiting for a rifle to be built say for a year? In Aust most double rifles including Merkel, Chapuis, Heym etc usually need to be ordered from the factory. However they do have local agents/dealers to deal with.

Africa was mentioned and "lots of PHs" using them. Which actual PHs carry Searcy double rifles in Africa?
