Barramundi and saltwater crocodiles?
      #67624 - 21/12/06 02:19 PM

When fishing for barramundi in a large billabong in Arnhemland last year a mate said I was mad for standing up to the thighs in the water. He said "where barramundi can get, so can crocodiles?"

What is the truth about this statement?

That is my understanding. Its just a general rule of thumb - saltwater crocodiles generally have some access to the estuaries and barra need access to the salt to breed so they are found in the same waterways.

The rule in the NT is not to go into the water! Not that I ALWAYS adhere to rules myself...

Matt

My mate was also pissed off as I was the only one to catch a barra. But I took my trousers off and waded into the water to un-snag the lure several times. Some tourists drove past in an open wagon so I guess they came close to getting a thrill.

Graham Williams didn't say anything so I think he thought the risk was minimal.

The place was somewhere in central Arnhemland near the Wilton somewhere.

Unless it has a black line on the bottom John, I don't go in ANY water. Case in point is our run in with a saltie whilst goose hunting (I've written a story on it for sporting shooter ) Just remember there are 3 to 4 meter salties being pulled from the Katherine and thats a long way from the sea. Gary Hall and I also spotted a BIG croc on a property in Mattaranka. We were a long way from the Roper in the escarpment country walking along a spring fed pool and a big croc splashed into the water. If it was a freshie it had to be the grand daddy of them all. There is also one thing that a croc can do that a Barra can't.....walk!
