Chapuis doubles-advice
      #63243 - 30/09/06 01:30 PM

I am hoping to pick the brains of forum members.
I am looking for a light double to compliment my Searcy 500
(used with great success at 16 yds on a tuskless elephant cow in the Omay a few weeks ago).
I like the look of the Chapuis SxS UGEX ejector model in 9.3x74 or the O&U model Super Orion C10 ejector model which can be had in 9.3x74 or 375 H&H.On this latter model they mention easily replaceable recoil/headspace plates should the action ever need tightening-what are these?
The brochure also describes the twin triggers as of the "Blitz" type-what is that?
Any general opinions on the weapons?

First of all congratulations on your hunt!

Most of the folks that I know who have handled the Chapuis have given it high marks. At the DRSS hunt in August, we all took turns shooting the scoped Chapuis 9.3X74R . It was a delight to shoot.

I would go for the 9.3X74R.

The link above is to a report filed on AR by a good friend of mine NE450#2. He had glowing praise for the performance of his 9.3X74R Chapuis.

Wombat

The UGEX is a fine utility grade double with very good accuracy at a moderate price. If you are going to put a scope on it, look at the new Chapuis swivel mounts. I got one in a couple weeks ago and it was the lowest I have ever seen a scope mounted on a DR.

Wombat
Do a search of my posts on this forum and on AR.
Bottom line is... I think the Chapuis 9,3x74R [properly scoped with QD mounts, as I have killed about 50% of the game shot with it with iron sights.],
is one of the finest hunting rifles under 40 cal, on the Planet Earth.

HI,

I've owned one and used it hunting on two continents since 2001. I really think they are a nice little rifle for the money. No its not a Purdey, but it doesn't cost the same.

The Blitz refers to the action which is a trigger plate design that is favored by the Germans for many of their drillings. It is different from the classic boxlock action. The higher grade guns and rifles by Chapuis have false sideplates but are NOT sidelocks, they are also Blitz actions.

Chapuis are nice because you can customise your rifle when you order it: stock measurements, engraving, scope mounts or not, extra shotgun barrels, and so on. Just be aware that these are "industrial" guns and rifles much like Aya, Beretta, Merkel, etc. So the level of hand finishing on a really nice artisanal gun or a nice "vintage" gun is just not going to be there. Also like those other guns some have some "teething" problems that are not caught when they leave the factory. For example, the top lever catch broke in a short time (it was not finished properly). Its a good idea to get a good smith to take the action apart and see what it looks like inside after you take it home: this piece of advice applies to other makers I've mentioned as well.

In regards to action he should devote himself to hunting...
