You can quite easly bring rifles and ammo into Australia - it's just paperwork that needs
filling out and maing sure your flight avoids all of the horrow countries.

You need to fill out and have issed a B709A Authority to Import which will list
all of your guns (MAKE SURE you get the Serial Numbers correct) + all of
the ammunition.

On exit you will also need to have CUSTOMS paperwork filled out for the export of the firearms.

Their may be some other requirements for certain states in Australia but
Your outfitter should be able to help you on all of this.

Good luck.

mate the easiest no hassle way is to simply borrow a rifle when you get here, very easy to do that in most places.I will lend you a 308 norma mag..hows that? especially if you bribe me with some ammo for it haha.

Gryphon,

Yes, taking guns hunting overseas is a bit of paperwork and hassle
but what's the point of owning, practising etc etc with a gun if when
you want to go OS on Safari you leave it at home ?

Well isnt culling and Safari the same thing, one is expensive, the other one is reasoably priced. Well if there is a farmer that needs help to cull, ill scrounge up cash and ammo and take a little trip to help.

Have gun will travel...........

zaitsev

I put them both in the same camp as when I go hutning
I would prefer to use my own guns.

After all, you practice shooting your gun for when the
inevitable comes one day so to change I think is mad.

A cull animal can charge just as much as a Trophy / Safari animal !!!

But everyone has a different opinion.

iam gonna bring one of my own . but if the cops start troubling me, there will be a couple of scripts for "Home and away" ready writteen for them there!!!

i was thinking about the guys who goes on the shooting range and talks about that there is just 2 months until the elg hunts starts. i would likt say to them that there is only 2 more months until the Samboar hunt /Ibex / Altai Argali/ Cape buffalo/ Bison / Crocodile hunt starts

is there culling of cangaroos down there ,just wonderd on it .

the rifle ill be most likely to bring is the 358 Norma since you never know what how the ranges will be or area aswell.

Do the paperwork and make sure everything is in order
and you will have no problems.

Re Kangaroos, only those people with a licence can shoot them
but regardless, everyone shoots them and I am sure someone
will help you bag one !!!

By the way, if you can hit a roo on the run you can say you are doing
well - as you don't only have to contend with it going fast from L to R or R to L
but also up and down !!! The trick is to keep a constant line about chest high
and follow it as it moves, watching it until it settles into an even rythum and then shoot.
If you shoot when it first takes off, it will be going faster than normal and not in an
even rythum.

FYI, I know people who head shoot them on the run and it's impressive

we have the shooting practis and also its a competition called running moose, its a target that runs on the track, and every time it goes over the track, one round is fired, but two can be fired aswell, i put in 3 once at the mauser shot them fast then ,or i repeated very fast. its total of 5 rounds they shoot the target and its more fun and learning than just to shoot an a papertarget.

I agree, moving tagets are make practice alot more fun than
paper stationary targets.

I will comment that accuracy is more important than speed,
however with practice you can achieve both.

The standard I aim for / work on is 4 Shots (ACCURATE)
in 10 Seconds at 3 Different Targets at 25 or 50 Yards with
a Standad Calibre - ie 308, 30-06 etc.

Once you can do this, then you start practising with the larget calibres.

i took a bear tracking course a few years ago, and the shooting there was 2 shots in 4 seconds, plus they had to hit aswell. there was ranges from 10 meters to a hundred. some of the best shooting i have been on ever, noe if i got the chance to participate in the shooting traing the south Africans do under theier PH training ,that would be good training.

In reply to:

A kangaroo is far faster than a moose and hops, does not run, so you have vertical movement as well.

As for a "self-guided" "cull hunt" most land in Australia is privately owned and the owner must give permission for a hunter to shoot or hunt on his land. Many hundreds of thousands of hunters in Australia try to get "cheap" good access and without good contacts or a willingness to part with some cash end up shooting rabbits on a friend's small block instead of medium size game hunting.

So not a lot of chance to get access to "cull" hunting, we call it hunting here BTW, and most game hunting with some exceptions is unregulated and mostly no limits, tags, etc. For a foreign based hunter wanting to hunt about the only chance is if either you spend a lot of time driving around asking for permission with the chance of nothing being achieved or having good friends who DO have access being willing to take the person out.

That is why most most international hunters hunting here hire the services of an outfitter. 1. Access to hunting country and 2. Supplies of vehicles, camping gear etc. 3. Shortage of time to do a LOT of asking to find a property. Nothing is going to be free or cheap in the end if you add up the total costs.
