Lapping Rings?
      #53335 - 26/03/06 01:06 PM

Do you guys lap your rings on your rifles? Why or why not? Are there some brands that don't need to be lapped? Any comments?

IMHO, the quality of rings nowadays mean that I think if you
want a quality rifle set up, particularly on tac holing rifles,
then you need to lap the rings.

In the past this didn't seem to be as much of a problem but
the fact everyone is competing so much on price means the
quality seem to be dropping.

Something else to consider is the metalwork and finish on your rifle.

It's really easy to get the action into a condition where the axis lines the mounts sit on aren't paralell. Even with the best, most consistent mounts and rings there is a possibility the rifle could be the reason you'd need to lap.
Even a one-piece mount can be sprung out of true when screwed down to an action that isn't perfectly true to whatever fantasy of a true outer action surface it was designed for.

The work involved in lapping a set of rings isn't so bad though, you could do it yourself for little cost in time or money.

There are rings available which have self-aligning features, where the rings employ a somewhat spherical grasp on inserts which in turn contact the scope tube. I don't recall just who does them, I haven't run them on a rifle myself either.

The rings are Burris Signatures and they do work. Keeps scratches off your scope. I've had to lap almost every set of rings I've installed over the past few years. It sure makes a difference in scope body condition, eliminates possible bending of the scope tube, and increases ring to scope contact to prevent slippage.

Very true.
Even if the manufacturer produced two perfect scope rings, they still have to be attached to the rifle action and misalignment to some degree is pretty well a sure thing.
You can often get away with very small misalignment on a scope that stays put, but on a QD scope system I believe lapping is very important.
