Mickey,

That story came directly from a master guide I hunted with a few years back on Kodiak Island. On our trip, we would park our butts on well worn bear trails (amazing that they all follow the same trails) and spot.

I asked him once or twice if it was wise sitting in the middle of a bear trail surrounded by alders with no ammo in anyone's rifle-his decree. He relayed the story about how he had been hunting that area for over 30 years, and knew bear behavior. He noted that once he fell asleep outside of a "cabin" with a client inside. The client saw a sow and her cubs walk right past the sleeping guide. The sow sniffed him and walked on.

I was with him for 15 days, and a sniff would have made me walk on as well.

Since he was the only one with a sat phone, I really didn't call bullshit on him. But he swears it was true.

Needless to say, I never hunted with him again.

But, the bears on Kodiak Island certainly do not starve, and have a ready food supply, unlike the Grizzly. They have an attitude.

As for the late Mr Treadwell, he and his companion were unarmed. The tape recording the State Police found was a lesson in how not to camp in bear country. If they had a rifle, he would have been mauled for sure, but he and his California concubine would have been alive today rather than greening Alaska as bear scat.

Back to the rifle though, pictures as soon as you get it!

I have 3 days to go before I meet my Heym at the DSC!

He got what he deserved. He did more to hurt bears then he ever could have done to save them.

In reply to:

Wait, so are both sets of barrels in 450 #2?

So which barrel set will I use today? No wonder they didn't name the 'second' calibre?

At least if one set has a problem the other set may not!

Good luck. Hope the rifle checks out.

In reply to:

Ok, you 450 No.2 guys, what loads do you use (recomend)?

OK my loads are using the Aussie powder AR2213SC, 105 grns with a 'foam' filler to take up the excess room. Seated to the cannelure with a 480 gr Woodleigh Weldcore RNSP or a FMJ. Federal 215 Magnum primer. Velocity is about 2100 fps.

This load in my rifle is quite high to the point of aim at 100 yards. It has crosses but not badly. Even so it has been usuable and has killed three buffalo, a scrub bull and an armfull of pigs to date. So I have still to work out a better load. Increasing and decreasing the powder resulted in worse results.

It has regulated however in two other .450 No2's that I know of.

IMR4831 has a similar burning rate to AR2213. AR is slightly faster. Approximately 100 grs for a 480 or 500 gr projectile. I received this load from an NE.com member and used it to calculate an AR powder. Later an Australian DR shooter confirmed my calculations.

I've tried a couple of other bullets but they did not work out more or less because they were not entirely suitable (ie .45/70 type bullets) and did not regulate. I'm yet to try a 500 gr and a 350 gr Woodleigh to see how they go.

The member NE450No2 has extensive practice in reloading his .450 No2 NE using a lot of propellants available in the USA. He is also very helpful and enthusiastic in these matters.
