SEARCH CALLED OFF FOR CROCODILE DUE TO THE NUMBERS PRESENT AT THE SCENE

Last Update: Friday, September 30, 2005. 8:11pm (AEST)

Rangers say they do not expect to find a crocodile that killed a diver off the NT coast. (ABC TV)

Killer croc will never be found, ranger says
A Northern Territory park ranger involved in the search for a crocodile that killed a diver on the Coburg Peninsula north of Darwin believes the culprit will never be found.

The search for the four-metre saltwater crocodile has been called off.

Park ranger Peter Fitzgerald was one of five people who searched for Russell Butel when the commercial diver went missing in Trepang Bay, 150 kilometres north-east of Darwin, at midday yesterday.

Searchers followed the coordinates of an EPIRB tracking device left by Mr Butel's dive partner.

They found Mr Butel's body two kilometres away just off a beach early yesterday afternoon.

Mr Fitzgerald says finding the crocodile is nigh-on impossible.

"There are that many crocodiles up there, it's just disappeared into the rest of the population," he said.

Mr Fitzgerald says all commercial divers in the Top End are aware of the dangers.

"They're taking a very grave risk as far as any water-based activity, it's just not on," he said.

He says Mr Butel's diving partner was traumatised by the attack and has returned to Darwin.

He will make a statement to police before flying home to New Zealand.

Victim had head bitten off [Re: NitroX]

Croc victim had head bitten off
From: By Nigel Adlam
October 01, 2005

A MAN killed by a crocodile on Thursday died from a single bite to the head and probably did not feel a thing.

Russell Butel, 55, was probably close to the surface of the water when he was grabbed while diving on the Coburg Peninsula in the Northern Territory.
The sea-cucumber diver suffered a crushed skull and jaw from an animal with biting power of around three tonnes for every two and a half square centimetres. Scientists believe the jaws of saltwater crocodiles are more powerful than the most fearsome dinosaur, tyrannosaurus rex.

A Darwin crocodile expert said Mr Butel was "probably splashing about".

"The croc would have lined him up and gone underwater from 100-200m," the zoologist said.

"The animal may then have surfaced right next to him and attacked. It would have all been over in seconds."

The wildlife ranger who found Mr Butel's body said it was floating about 2km from the attack site.
Peter Fitzgerald said he had seen as many as 12 crocodiles at a time in the bay.

"The locals here are very reluctant to go near the water and are fairly crocodile-aware, which I hope everyone is after such an incident. It's just a sad event," he said.

Mr Butel was one of the Northern Territory's most experienced divers.

He was collecting fish and coral for his aquarium supply business near Vashon Head, north of Darwin, when the crocodile struck.

Colleagues said Mr Butel was a dedicated diver who was influential within the industry.

"He was committed to developing the industry and had worked for it for a long time," aquarium fishery committee chairman Brian Koennecke said.

"Russell will be greatly missed by all of us and everyone involved in diving and fishing in the Territory."

He was the second man to be killed by a crocodile in the Territory in five days.

Mine superintendent Russell Harris, 37, was killed while snorkelling at Groote Eylandt last Sunday.

Mr Butel's wife Loraine was yesterday being comforted by her daughter Michelle.

A friend said she was "traumatised".

Mr Butel's diving partner, Nick Sherwood, who was in a dinghy during the attack, was last night still in shock.

Police said they would not shoot the 4m crocodile.

Divers said Mr Butel was working where there was a high risk of attack.

But friends said he knew the risks and accepted them as an occupational hazard.

Most crocodile attacks occur between late September and January when crocodiles are hungry after the dry season and are preparing to breed.

Rising temperatures and humidity make them more active.

Three recent attacks - two in the Northern Territory and one in north Queensland last month - have sparked calls for a cull of the animals.

More croc news [Re: NitroX]

Diver dead: A large crocodile was sighted in the area. (ABC TV)

Croc attack victim named
A 56-year-old aquarium fish diver has been identified as the victim of a crocodile attack on the Coburg Peninsula, about 150 kilometres north-east of Darwin.

Russell Butel from the Darwin-based company Aquatica North Australia was diving for aquarium fish in Trepang Bay when he went missing at midday yesterday.

His diving partner raised the alarm when he saw a four-metre crocodile in the area and police say Mr Butel's body showed signs of crocodile attack when it was found early in the evening.

A dive operator working on the Coburg Peninsula says saltwater crocodiles have become less afraid of humans in recent years and a cull is needed.

Sascha Muller from Coral Divers says he is constantly fearful of attack when diving in the area and the crocodile population can withstand a drop in numbers.

"The crocodile is so large and they've grown so big in the time that they don't recognise fear and it wouldn't take long with a culling program in place for crocodiles to start to develop fear and I think things would change dramatically," he said.

"They're not really that endangered. There's quite a few of them around."

The Parks and Wildlife Service says rangers have spotted at least a dozen large saltwater crocodiles in the area but no-one can afford to be complacent if they are swimming in any waterway in the Top End.

Diver missing, croc nearby
From: AAP
September 29, 2005

A LARGE crocodile was spotted close to where a diver went missing in the Northern Territory earlier today, police said.

Authorities were searching for the diver in the Cobourg Peninsula area after he was reported missing.
A police spokesman said the man did not surface from a routine dive about 11.30am CST.

Another diver reported seeing a large crocodile nearby, he said.

No other details were available.

The incident comes just days after a British snorkeller was killed by a 4m crocodile while swimming off Groote Eylandt in the NT.

Govt criticised over croc removal refusal
A central Queensland crocodile expert says the Fitzroy River is unsafe for recreational users while the State Government refuses to remove a large crocodile.

A risk assessment done by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service suggested warning signs, fencing and relocating bins from the water's edge as some of the alternatives to relocating the crocs.

But expert John Lever wants the crocs moved and believes the the State Government policy on crocodiles is flawed.

"I haven't seen the document but from all accounts it says there is a risk, but something the Government is prepared to take with people's lives in the ski gardens ... and I think that is absolute nonsense," he said.
