One Happy Camper

I'm one happy camper. Had the day off today and went browsing around some small town gunshops in Southern Indiana today. I found, what for me at least, is one of my Holy Grail items. A Browning Safari grade in .458WM. Date is 1974 and rifle is mint - from bolt face, barrel and chamber - I don't think its ever been fired. The best part, I picked it up for six hundred and change. Owner said "its been here forever, no one wants that big caliber around here. Would you be interested, sonny"? Just about the first thing I said was "SOLD"!

Anyway, thanks for letting me share. My new rifle can now join his Browning Safari brothers in 30-06 and .375 H&H already in the safe. Until this weekend that is....boom, boom.

VLADMIR
Congratulations on your new 458.
I think the 458 is the best caliber for a persons first big bore as they are so versatile. Try the 350, grain Hornady RN at any velocity from 1800 to 2300 fps. [pick the recoil level you like] and use it to hunt deer, wild pigs, and black bear. The 458 with 400,450,or 500 grain bullets is a great brown bear, moose, and elk rifle in the thick. The Browning is a Classic.
Keep us posted on how she shoots.
If you fit a scope use good quality QD mounts so you can do some hunting with iron sights, really ads to the fun. [pollstop]

There isn't anything wrong with a 458WM. Depending on how long your magazine box is, you just might seat the bigger bullets out further for increased capacity. $600, that's a steal.

Sounds like a great buy. And a great armory too. Three classic calibres.

Great round - and as flexible as they come.
: I've used the 350gr. Hornady RN up to 2,260fps in the shorter 2" 'American' chamber on black bear & moose with excellent results and nowadays load a 400gr. Barnes in a the larger, more powerful .458 Alaskan M70 at a reduced 2,200fps for wonderful results on moose and bear. Having more than enough power even when loaded down, makes the .458's a terrific all-round, ctg. here and abroad.
: It is a hunter's ctg., not a long range sniper-type round, although with good bullets and sighting, 400 yards is within reach for a very good shot.
: Most .458's are very acurate when shot well.
: I'm envious- great buy.
