i do not own a mauser rifle but am looking at one to purchase.it is a model b in 30-06.i am in discussion about the purchase.it is original finish wood and metal.has a parker hale cocking piece peep sight and he will be sending pictures.has a serial number which places it in 1928-1929.the present owner indicates it is all original and about 80% with an excellent bore.i am wondering if it would be safe with modern 30-06 ammo.and i would say probably needs to be checked out by a gunsmith.any advise and i thank you all.john

If the rifle is in properly original condition there shouldn`t be any problem with such max. pressures as .30-06 will have. In C.I.P -standards .30-06 Pt.Max is 4050 and 7x64, which is very similar caliber as .30-06 is and one of most used caliber in m98 Mauser, is Pt.max 4150.
But despite that it´s good idea to get a good gunsmith to check the rifle.

Agree, get it checked out. 30'06 is common enough that your smith should have headspace guages but if it is really in as good condition as reported I would expect no issues. I do have a TypeA in 30'06 which has a generous chamber though but has not presented any problems. You will learn a lot here when you post pictures regarding condition and originality. Look forward to seeing it.

thanks for those replies.i guess i am wondering whether the 30-06 ammo made in the period of time the gun was made 1928-1929 was loaded to a lower pressure than modern factory ammo today.thanks john

Very unlikely, and even if today's ammo is loaded a little hotter, it wouldn't be enough to worry a Mauser. If you are going to use standard off the shelf ammo, you will probably find that your gun will shoot best with 180gr bullets (not sure if you can get much heavier factory loaded) but in my experience, accuracy has been acceptable out to 100yds with just about any factory ammo. I will add that I will not use Hornady Superformance ammo. I got scary high pressure signs in my 35Whelen with that ammo.

On the contrary! Nitro powder technology was not so advanced in the 1920s as we are used to now. Powders were much faster burning up to after WW2. IMR 3031, 4895 or Rottweil R5 were considered progressive burning, IMR 4064 being regarded as THE powder for the Magnum cartridges. Real progressive burners like 4350 or 4831 entered the scene after WW2 only. So the 1920 loads may have achieved less velocity than today, but they needed more pressure to do so.

My model B 30-06 is about the same age as yours and I have no issues firing any factory ammo in it. If yours turns out to be as advertised it should work just fine .

Current figures for the .30/06 working pressures by PEZIO gauge, not copper units:
SAAMI 60,000psi
CIP 59,000 PSI

If I recall Hatchers blow up tests , despite his hardest efforts he could not blow up a 30-06 Mauser sporter 1920 rifle .Finally he loaded the entire 30-06 case with bullseye powder ,epoxied a bullet in the case and fired it. The barrel blew entirely off the receiver but the action still worked. I would never worry about any cartridge in a decent working Mauser action as it might be the safest of all.
