“NO MORE HUNTING”-KHAMA
No one will be allowed to hunt wildlife in Botswana, come 2014, President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has announced.

He said wildlife numbers were decreasing at an alarming rate, hence the decision.

"Next year will be the last time anyone is allowed to hunt in Botswana and we have realised that if we do not take care of our animals, we will have a huge problem in terms of tourism," President Khama told Sankoyo and Mababe residents last week.

The President also decried the rate at which poachers were killing elephants.

"We have increased the number of soldiers and police officers that patrol our game parks. Yesterday our officers apprehended five people with 12 elephant tusks in the Chobe area. Two of them are Batswana and three are Zimbabweans," said President Khama.

He said government was aware of people's complaint about damages caused by the elephants in their villages, especially in the farms.

"There is someone who will come to this district next week, starting with Khwai village. That person will help you chase away elephants from your villages by using certain methods that he has been taught," he said.

He indicated that elephants were the main attraction of tourists to Botswana hence he could never allow for them to be killed. He also informed residents that compensation for damage done to farms by elephants would be 100 per cent instead of the current 35 per cent.

"As for those who lose cattle because of lions and other predators, compensation will be cattle," he said.

President Khama indicated that compensation would be done after extensive investigations.

He also appealed to residents to help law enforcement officers in fighting poaching.

In South Africa, he said, poachers killed 440 rhinos last year and this year they had so far killed 450.

Earlier on, residents of Sankoyo had complained to President Khama about elephants that were damaging their crop fields and lions which killed their livestock.

They also pleaded with the President to extend the hunting season since elephants were too many in their village. BOPA

Shades of Kenya in the 70's!

The ban on hunting resulted in (1) the loss of revenue from hunting licenses and fees which supported the Game Department and (2) the loss of the services of professional hunters, who were all deputy game wardens and highly motivated to preserve wildlife against poachers.

Those who benefited were the same government officials who introduced the policy and raked off a share of the illegal proceeds.

Botswana has closed before and will re-open and close many times again. So is the nature of the continent.

Botswana's Elephant problems are somewhat unique (they have lots of them)in that when hunted on concessions and trust lands for any length of time, they move/migrate onto private and tribal lands, where there is very little or no hunting permitted. As has been demostrated in the past, a few years of not hunting them and they move back off of the lands they will be harrassed on. Real problem being that there will be 25-40,000 more Ele' in that 4-5 year time frame.

Loss of revenue is not a problem for Botswana, they are very well off. Escalation of poaching due to cuts in oversight, may indeed be a reality. That said, most sub-saharan countries depend on poaching to manage Elephant numbers. Far cheaper and easier for them.

I'm with Caprivi on this one. They will open up again. I just hope no one booked a trip and got an old fashioned Botswana burn job.

Botswana with its diamonds and a generally honest environment is prosperous. Not everyone is in diamonds or the civil service, or has any compunction to do so. They will starve or be driven out. driving out the Europeans from hunting is just the start. Farmers and landowners will be next. It will just be done very politely.

Yeah...that has worked so well for Zimbabwe hasn't it????

Seems shocking to me with all the natural resources Africa has, how poor they are in the world...quite obvious there is very poor management and corruption going on in a very large scale..


Hey, maybe to fix this we could transfer Barry Obama back over there and he can re-distribute the wealth ???

Removing the wildlife, allows Cattle ranching to expand.


Botswana is rich in cattle. Rich in minerals.

For a long time they have wanted to expand cattle into wildlife rich areas. Tsetse flies and sleeping sickness has been the reason they have not. I read in the last few years about widespread serial spraying for tsetse fly. I guess if it worked, removing the game and wildlife through poaching will allow the cattle in.
