Warning; Xylitol And Hunting Dogs
      #195191 - 29/11/11 03:49 AM

Just posting a warning about the sweetener Xylitol. Its use in many products is expanding, and it is a favorite of diabetics and hypoglycemics.

While it is safe for humans, veterinary reports indicate it can be deadly to dogs, causing life-threatening hypoglycemia at the dose of .1 gram per KG of dog weight, and severe liver necrosis at .5 gram per KG of dog weight.

Some dogs have been made severely sick by mere ingestion of chewing gum. Leaving baked goods, dough or other food products sweetened with Xylitol around where dogs could get at them could be disastrous to the dog. For example, a single muffin made with 1/4 cup of wheat flour and sweetened with 24 grams {1/8 cup} of Xylitol would be deadly to a large dog of big Labrador Retriever size {50 KG's/ 110 pound dog}.

Be careful!!

Let's hope that people having picnics out in the wild don't leave such food behind that might be injested by a wolf or other wild canine.

Lots of foods contain Xylitol, and they are increasing, but some include low levels of the sweetener and may not be dangerous, I don't know.

Sville, the chemical theobromine which is present in chocolate is toxic to canids. In fact, curiously enough, theobromine and caffeine are being used by USDA/APHIS/WS in an attempt to develop a new coyote toxicant. Not going too well, as the yotes often puke the stuff up before it takes effect.

An additional note should be made about Xylitol. Canids love sweet stuff and they seem to like the stuff, so beware lest your dogs come into contact with it.

All canids are effected by Xylitol, by the way. So are some ungulates {cattle, goats, deer also I believe}.

Good thought, Erik. We must be careful in what we leave behind, that's for sure.

An additional note regarding the question about chocolate and toxicant development since the issue was brought up.

Toxicant controls are developed using mechanical and/or chemical means to specify target species and eliminate non-target impact. The M-44 "Coyote Getter" device, for example, uses a baited chewing pad, the chewing action limited to certain species like coyotes, which results in the firing of the cartridge and projection of the sodium cyanide "dust". The currently-under-development CLOD device uses a chewing pad of sorts also. Chemical means means might be used to prevent non-target species impact; blood meal or other blood product ingredients like Plantskydd may be added, or even simple animal fat {bacon grease, etc} might be added as leavening in a product targeting coyotes, as an example. The process by which a toxicant is developed for registration here in the USA is actually quite interesting. Usually very long and fraught with legal attacks and other regulatory obstacles.

Then, USDA also has to meet human-ness requirements for approval and registration. This can involve lots more testing and experimentation. Length of time to effect, symptoms, etc are studied.

Under development currently is an improved coyote toxicant {for broader use not just limited to private lands} and also a pig toxicant due to the spread of feral hogs throughout the USA.
