Are African animals more wary also?
      #1838 - 03/03/03 04:11 AM

I have been thinking of the dificulty in hunting plainsgame. It is accepted as truth that African animals are tougher to kill than equal sized animals in NA and the South Pacific.

My question is, Are they harder to hunt?

I have hunted a bit in Africa and would agree with the statements that most shots are under 200 yards. Most of those shots are under 100 yards.

Do we agree?

Also, if you are on a guided hunt than your party usually consists of, at minimum, 3 people. You, 1 PH and 1 tracker. Sometimes, 2 trackers and a second hunter for a total of 5, maybe more. Vehicles putt around full of people and a number of animals are shot off of or close too the truck.

Do we still agree?

If this is agreed upon than how many of you, with deer, elk etc. experience think that you can have 3 - 5 people walk within 150 yards of a Deer or and Elk, in semi-open terrain, discuss size, set up shooting sticks and still find the Deer or Elk within a mile of you?

How many Whitetail could you see if 3 - 5 of you were wondering around the woodlot?

I know that everyone has a story about the Kudu or the Eland or the Red Hartebeast that he/she couldn't get close to. Or the 6 point bull that walked into the camp of hunters but I am talking in general terms.

Mickey,
Although I've never hunted NA or S. Pacific game I have hunted (as a PH and for myself) a lot of animals in a lot of African locations. So I'll add my "two pennorth" where I can. If there's one truism about Africa, it's never say never and never say always. I think you're over-generalising.

Although most African animals are pretty resiliant, mostly due to the fact that everything wants to eat everything else. Some animals die easier than others. Nyala for example (generally) die easily.....Assuming correct bullet placement.

There's also large parts of Africa where nearly ALL the shooting is in excess of 200 yards.............. having said that, I personally don't like that kind of shooting. I prefer to get my clients real close. Especially to dangerous game. Also I don't let them shoot from (or near to) the hunting vehicle. It's actually illegal in most provinces of SA, and also most other African countries. And unsporting in ALL countries!!!!(but not always, just generally)

As to harder to hunt? I can't answer that as I've never hunted in the US. But I will say that on average there are probably a lot more animals per square mile in the African bush than in most places in the States or elsewhere. This must mean that the average hunter sees a lot more chances to get a shot than most other continents.

I have had, over all, a harder time with deer. Mostly because property access is limited for me and it prohibits a lot of stalking like one gets in Africa.

Some places I have hunted in Africa had cattle on the property, I think that made hunting a little easier as the game was used to more "traffic" and movement. Plus with the cattle boys always about with the herds they had more exposure to people.

I don't think African game is any more difficult to kill than those in North America. I think, in general, problems arise due to a lack of knowledge when it comes to African game anatomy. I think you'd agree that in most African plains game, the heart/lung area lies much more forward as compared to Deer and Elk. Most hunters here in the states opt for a behind the shoulder shot, as this is where the largest vital area is, but on most plains game, this same shot would be a wounding one. I've found that on plains game, the best shot is generally on the point of the shoulder.

As far as being more difficult to hunt/stalk:we're comparing apples and oranges. In Africa, most hunts are conducted on private land, with no other hunters on the property. By contrast, here in my home state of Pennsylvania, most hunting is on public/state forest/game lands. We have over 1 million licensed hunters in the state, and our rifle deer season only lasts for 2 weeks, with no hunting permitted on sundays. You put that many hunters into the forests, with their scent wafting toward the deer from every direction, and you've got a very alert and cautious animal.

By contrast, on the African hunts the animals are more alert to the presence of predators: lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, etc. Game densities are much higher, variety of game greater, and with only one hunting party in the bush at a time, stalking is easier.
