illuminated reticles
      #17189 - 26/07/04 04:29 AM

I am in the market for a very good quality tough scope for a CZ 550 safari in 375. I am familiar with Leopold and Nikon… My questions are:
1. What power and brand would you all recommend? I don’t want anything very “big and heavy)
2. Who has the best prices for said scope?
3. What about the “new” illuminated reticles (good/bad)?
4. Would you recommend QD rings for the CZ and if so who makes them?
Thanks to all for your input?

1x4 Leupold or 1.5x5x Leupold...

Stay away from illuminated reticles or any thing that has batterys that run down IMO...

Lock, Stock and Barrel has good prices, but so do a lot of the big wholesale chains...

For a great deal on Leupolds find a nice used one, the gurantee is still good to the second hand buyer....I bought all mine second hand....

CZ has QDs made by Talley, or get the Brockman/Talley pop up peep conversion, its a great set up...

Ok. I'm also looking at a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 scope with an illuminated reticle. According to Leupold, even if the battery dies, or its turned off,the cross hairs are black and still visible. My concern is their reliability(ie their actual electronics, wires, connections etc.) under the recoil of my .416 Rigby. Also, how thick are the illuminated dots/cross hairs compared to standard reticles.? I haven't found any one who has actually use one. I'd like to hear from anyone who has. And any input is appreciated.

Oh. The best prices that I've found on Leupold scopes are at D & R Sports. They seem to be about fifty dollars cheaper than most others.

Hauptjager,

I have an illuminated reticle in my Zeiss Varipoint VM 2.5-10x50. I haven't had time to shoot more than about 100 shots yet with it on my .375H&H, but so far I've had no problems. Nor have any other Zeiss owners I know (and I know quite a few). I guess you get what you pay for...

But I would like to point out that the center red dot is black if the light is off, and thus is just as usable as a non illuminated scope if the battery runs down... So the way I see it, you have no problems either way. In dawn/dusk situations the light is a definate benefit on a dark animal standing against a dark backround (at least in our hunting situations here in Norway, where it's often quite dark even during the day...).

Ray,

You are of course correct when it comes to Europeans and gadgets (but lets not get into the Blaser and so on... ) However, I do see the benefit of a reticle as I mentioned that works with both the light on or off. Having shot a bit more with it since I posted above, I'd say that I feel that I can get a good snap shot off quicker with the red dot. And this isn't just BS. It's just the way our eyes work. Which is why both our armed forces (and most police forces) use the Swedish Aimpoint on their rifles and machine pistols. If these are good enough to be used in places such as Afganistan and Iraq, I'd think a red dot would be good enough for general hunting. As long as it is just as functionable without the light turned on.

I do think though that there probably is a differance in quality with the differant makes, and that one gets what one pays for. I know Leupold makes quality scopes, but I don't know how good their red dot versions are, since they are rather new. Whilst the Euro producers have been doing this for a while.

I have a Swarovski 1.5-6x42 with the illuminated circle dot reticle on my 9,3x74R double rifle. Both the circle and dot are illuminated. The brightness is adjustable so you can use the illuminated feature from daytime to dark. The reticle is in the first focal plane so when on low power and shooting fast and close the dot is very small but the circle is just right.
The reticle also works very good with out being illuminated. I shot 16 animals in Africa with it and it worked very well, including a civet cat and a side striped jackal after dark. I "sighted in" on a female leopard in a tree after dark and could see the reticle just fine.
I like this scope so well I plan to scope a 308 and a 375 with one. The battery lasts a long time and you can carry a spare right on the scope.
