Initial barrel convergence setup
      #153193 - 09/02/10 11:13 AM

while planning the monoblock for my double barrel whitetail rifle i questioned whether the barrel bores should be machined parallel or at a convergence angle and if so what should the angle be for a cartridge with a volicity of app.2500 fps[7-30 waters].Ellis Brown seemed to bore them parallel then pinch them in about .080inch.He then began his regulation process.Your experienced or carefully considered opinions are appreciated.

Never built a double, but can only imagine that you want the case head to bear as close to flat against the breech face as possible, thus, the barrels must be parallel, and perpendicular to the standing breech.

I would bore them parallel and do as Mr. Brown described. It works.

Hi Sullyva,

God has spoken...... what Bailey has done proves he knows what works.....

The problem is that the existing barrels are NOT parallel. They start to converge right from the breech face. If you bore them parallel then you end up with walls at the front end of the barrel flats, which are noticeably thicker on the inside(near the rib) than on the outside. This greatly complicates mating the new barrels with the monoblock. I have personally found it far superior to bore them concentric to the existing chambers. It just means that you have to spread the barrels apart with your spacers but that has never caused me any problems with the four that I've built so far.

The problem as i see it is that the more you need to bend the barrels (out if an old set of shot tubes are cut, and in if a new is built with parallell holes) the worse will it behave when getting warm. If you could set them at the right angle from the start to regulate it would be awsome, but that newer happens but as close as possible is what i would try to do.

If making a new monoblock, making the holes parallel might at least save that problem I once read about of cases stretching on one side, making rechambering when reloaded difficult.

Maybe this has nothing whatsoever to do with the question but I wonder if the upward pressure on some forend tips in some light barelled bolt actions would not have an effect on the tip of a barrel similar to setting the double barrels parralell and bringing the muzzles together for convergance. That is, it has no discernable ill effect for hunting situations and neither would the slight pinching of the doubles barells.

Are you saying what i think or are im misunderstanding it completely. I make sure none of my bolts forends are even touching the barrel to get decent accuracy, mostly due to humidity but also if shooting series. My worst case did spread the bullets some 35cm at 100m from shot one to shot four.

But you are right in a hunting situation it wont mather, usually there are only one or two shots fired, but its good to know it will hold the groups if more round were needed.
