Are Kodiak's regulated?
      #129414 - 13/03/09 11:09 AM

I am thinking about taking the plunge and purchasing my first double in a used Kodiak in 8mm. I was wondering if these rifles are actually regulated or are just advertised as. Thank you.

I didn't know that Pedersoli's Kodiak was made in an 8mm. Good to know. My 9.3X74R Kodiak is regulated pretty good and several 45-70's I've seen are good also according to the owners.

My .45/70 is regulated as well as any double rifle I have owned - provided you use the load it was regulated for. That's true of all DR's - they must be fed correctly.

Thanks for the info guys. It is in 8x57. The famed 8mm Mauser, one of my favorite rounds. I assume I can find what load it was regulated for via the company?

Of course, it would be 8X57JRS, but if you have dies for the rimless 8X57 they work fine.

If you cannot get load info from the manufacturer, load up four of each (with the bullet weight you desire) in incremental loads from the low end up and see how they group. Then fine tune the charge from the best load.

I bet some guys here have some 8mm pet loads they could pass on to you.
I am still working up a proper load for my 8mm double so I am not much help here.

DITTO
Mine was one of the early guns from Trail Gun Armory.
Worked well.
Later rechambered to 45-90 and finally 45-120 it was accurate in all iterations.

At the cost of these rifles, I'd be willing to bet they are aligned with lazers and brazed, just as the muzzleloading barrels are. Regualted with lazers to a set pattern, is regulation of a sort, therefore, their add's are not lies. To regulate as in the old British method of shooting, separating re-soldering and re-testing, they'd have to be soldered, so changes could be made. Brazing eliminates this possibility.

Running a sharp instrument along an under rib to see if it's soldered or brazed (silver colour or brass colour) should answer the original question about regulating.

Regulation of the 'load' used by the shooter can cause big changes in point of impact, and therefore, what is poorly regulated for one load, might be perfect for another. Both windage and elevation changes are normal. Sometimes powder changes- amount or actual #, sometimes bullet changes in weight or type, seating depths and even different primers can change point of impact due to intensity and speed of ignition.
