Ruger No.1 from .458 Lott to 450NE 3 1/4
      #128917 - 07/03/09 02:11 AM

I am looking to rechamber my Ruger No.1 from .458 Lott to 450NE 3 1/4. Any gunsmith recommendations here in the USA. Average cost?

Thanks

I considered that also. The problem I see is the large rim size would require some fancy gunsmithing. I concluded the cost and potential risk of buggering not worth it.

Probably better off with a re-chamber to .45 3-1/4" Sharps - pretty much the same difference as to capacity and same rim size and extractor as a .45/70. You can call it anything you want, but should be stamped .45 3-1/4" somewhere in case you sell it.

Daryl:
Will the Sharps reamer clean up the belt/rim recess of a .458 Lott/WinMag chamber?

The .458 belt dia is .530 I believe, whereas COTW indicates that the Sharps base dia is only .506-inch.

The base dia of the .450 NE is .548 or thereabouts?

Didn't even think about the belt; too the .45 Sharps case (.505" SAAMI) is actually slightly smaller than the SAAMI .513" of a belted case ahead of the belt, but that part is not the problem - problem lies with the belt coming out on the solid head portion of the .45 Sharp's case. With normal loads, it might be OK, but I wouldn't do it. The barrel really should be set back 1 turn at least, I'd go 2 turns, then re-chambered - no big deal- about 2/10" shorter than now. Set back, it would be just fine.

I've converted a No. 1 from 45-70 to 45-100 (the 2.6" case); the 45-100 gives you a good rimmed case with about 9% more volume than a 458wm. The 45-100 will be cheaper to feed (hand loads only, of course) using the Starline brass and the volume is just right for nitro powders to get 2150fps with the 500 grain bullets without needing filler. As already mentioned, the barrel would need to be set back a little bit to get rid of the belt section of the original chamber. I could have easily rechambered but went with a new barrel to get the right twist rate for the heavier bullets. Pac-Nor sells barrels contour matched to your sample and pre-fit for the No. 1 which cuts down on the work involved. How much do you want to spend on the project?

I have the reamer and would be happy to do it for you.

"How much do you want to spend on the project?"

That is the quintessential question for everything in life.

No fancy gunsmithing required, but a short visit with a ball endmill may be. Its a pretty simple conversion really.

Sharps Nitro - I've done the same thing but on a strong rolling block, but went to the .45 2-7/8" case. That's about max for easy loading with smokeless. The 3 1/4" cases are a pain with today's smokeless powders. Even a .45/90 (2.4") with a 3/8" leade and 2 degree throat will give identical ballistics to a .458 WM on a Ruger #1.

Agreed, the 3.25 case isn't all that practical. The 45-90 case volume is probably within 1-2% of the 458wm so it is closer to being a direct "rimmed 458". I looked at the 2.8" case (more of a 458 Lott) but ended up choosing the 2.6" due to the cheaper brass and out of historical context. I've been working on a Borchardt project and the 45-100 was the "big cartridge of the day" for that rifle. Also, with the 2.6" case I don't need to compress the powder to get 458wm ballistics.

I agree- the 2.6" case is a good one. Did'ya know the 2.4" Sharps case was also called the .45/100/500? Our modern 2.4" brass will not hold the full 100gr. charge, though.

Yeah. The 45 caliber Sharps cartridges could get a bit confusing when using the diameter + powder charge convention.

Tongo ,

I know this reply is a bit late for your thread . I took a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott and did exactly what you wanted . The cost was that of the chamber reamer in 450 3 1/2 express . The belt on the 458 Lott is smaller in diameter than the base of the 450NE . The Ruger extractor is spring loaded from the side so it does adjust to the different rim diameters including that of the 450 . The only other slight modifications were to remove a small amount of metal from the top of the breech block slightly to clear the rim for extraction and to remove the breech end of the sliding safety to also clear the rim during extraction . I did the conversion with the stainless steel tropical and had to polish the chamber but I would venture the regular steel would cut easier with the reamer . It shoots very well and functions flawlessly , and is the type of project you could do at home with simple tools if you were inclined . It took about 3 hours to dismount the barrel , cut and polish the chamber , breech block , and safety slide and reassemble . Recoil is very tolerable . Jim
