Flanks of the frame are engraved HOLLAND/&/HOLLAND within engraved borders with English spiral scroll borders to the frame and wheat chaff engraved borders to tangs, triggerguard, lever, and upper and lower frame. Engraving does not match the pattern typically encountered on Holland & Holland actions, suggesting it was completely redone. Barrel address reads HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. WINNERS OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. Top of the frame and the rear sight base are both matted, and the safety lever is finely checkered and engraved with gold inlaid SAFE marking. Stock features a horn buttplate and both the barrel and butt are fitted with sling loops. Barrel and frame lack British firing proofs, suggesting the restoration was carried out outside of the United Kingdom. Rear breechblock retains a crisp {Crown/V} London viewing marking. Toe of the stock fitted with a silver oval plate that is unsigned. Takedown lever has been shortened or replaced. Serial number data matches a rifle that originally left Holland & Holland in .303 caliber. A rifle in this caliber with this serial number appears in Wal Winfer's "British Single Shot Rifles: Volume V, Holland & Holland", suggesting that the serial number of this lot was most likely applied when it was rebuilt.
