Re: Savage Long Range Hunter 6.5/284

The 6.5 x 284 is a fine long range cartridge but it will burn out the barrel quickly especially if you have it loaded hot. A very good alternative is the 260 Ackley Improved (308 case with 40 deg shoulder). Almost the same velocity with lower pressure. That caliber is winning most matches down here at 560 yards and 1000 yards. I have over a 1000 rounds through mine without a loss of accuracy or throat erosion.

I don't think 260 Ack imp, loaded under 65K psi with 26 inch barrel, can achieve 3050-3100fps with 140grain bullets like the 6,5-284 Norma or 6,5-64 Brenneke does. I know 139's can reach 2900fps. 243win with 115 grain bullets loaded to 3100-3150fps will be even better for long range target shooting. Easy to find brass for and no forming or worry about doughnuts, reaming etc.
