I must have read Corbett a thousand times since I was a boy, but I could never have enough! Thanks for posting this, one of his best pieces.

I agree with his description of a tiger's roars in the wild - from the umph-umph mating call to an angry roar they have to be heard to be believed. And, there is no more magnificent sight than that of a tiger in the wild. The huge elephant, the only slightly smaller gaur and the Assamese rhino are all fine beasts but none can compare with the sight of a tiger. Those who have seen one would agree with me. Those who haven't, had better rush. India's crappy forestry processes mean that the tiger will soon be extinct in the wild there.
