A less than efficient bite. Or other injuries and infirmities. Infection before antibiotics would be a likely killer of any such attack. The fetid breath of a carnivore from bits of flesh from previous meals, spread into account. Though flushing wounds with antiseptic, iodine pepple did survive. As for the bite itself, some people carried terrible injuries into later life if they survived the initial effects and aftermath infection. It's an interesting suspenseful action image.
