Re: shooting a nilgai antelope with a 50 BMG

Used the 50 BMG on rock chucks some years ago. Very unimpressive. Just bore a 1/2" hole right through them They never moved, The only way we knew we hit them was, well they never moved. We killed a couple and finally went back to the 22-250's for drama.

Later that same year the owner of this gun, shot a deer with it. He said because of what he saw on chucks he aimed for the shoulder bones. The shot bore clear through. The meat was not bloodsjot , rather it was contaminated by bone fragments. He used some sort of softpoint/expanding bullet, becasue FMJ's were illegal. Don't know what bullet and can't ask my friend as he passed away in 2018.

We stopped shooting the gun on the prairie after seeing how many times and how far those 50 BMG bullets skipped. We were shooting surplus ammo and one turned out to be a tracer. The bullet skipped far and high for a long time.

Went to a Machine Gun shoot out near Guymon OK a couple of years ago and saw that again---those 50 BMG bullets skip forever. They stopped that shot after somebody fired bunch of tracers and started a giant prairie fire.

That 50 BMG is a powderful long range cartridge, but not suitable in my experience for hunting.

It's a dandy war gun I hear.
