Re: Goat hunting in the Northern Flinders Ranges

Frederik

I thought those pictures did have lots of trees!

****

When I started goat hunting I used a .222 Remington 788 with 55 gr Nosler Solid Bases. Handles most feral goats OK, but I was getting too many wounded goats and had to follow too many up. And when its hot a follow up up and down mountains is a major pain. Then I shot a reasonably sized trophy billie and lost him in the bush. Searched for him but never found him.

Stuff that. Upgraded to a .30-06 with 150 gr Nosler Solid Base HPs and pure murder on these light animals. Any animal hit reasonably dropped very quickly and even if the odd gut-shot occurred the animal usually died before I could get to it Note this isn't shooting one or two, sometimes we tried to take out the entire herd for the grazier.

The best calibre is probably a 6mm to a 270 with one of my favourites being the 6.5x55mm.
