Poking about Nth East Vic.

I went up into Victoria's Nth East high country in search of only one thing,Sambar! A leisurely four hour drive from my home.

It was very frosty and cold and then it rained on the third day as I was making my way well into a gully and not long after I found a yellow/red clay wallow which eventually led me to seeing a hind on the other side of a heavy berry gully and as she had looked above her twice I glassed hard and finally I found a stag that was rubbing a tree 50 odd yards above her.He was obscured except for a flash of antler now and then and his body was hidden by a horizontal bent tree trunk.I never got a decent ID and any shot would have been very tough due to foliage restrictions.
Trying everything I could to make out his size was very hard and eventually he walked off and i only momentarily saw his left antler and I said to myself "oh fuuck he is a good one' it was very thick heavy antler too.
I had no chance of a good shot at any time at all and it was very disappointing to me as I had worked very hard the 2 days before doing around 9 hours a day.

I stayed on my side of the gully for another hour going up and down continually looking and even stayed when heavy fog rolled in and shut the lights out and then it lifted well enough to see a 3rd deer come out and nibbled black berry leaves,he is just a young stag with a broken left beam and it was annoying that there was drifting fog in the gully combining with having lost my glasses earlier meant I couldn't take a decent photo of him,all I could see in the LCD screen was a brown blur. You can see the yellow mud on him, plus the scars too. Bloody thumper deer in body as well,I had a real good side on look at him. He lives!

Interesting one morning standing in the old hut door looking up the hill I saw two `roo`s running hard and I knew something was chasing them and yep three wild dogs were running after them, a red with black brindle and two blacks.
They were 300 m`s away and there wasnt much chance to get a rifle for a shot.
I carried my 308 NM the four days and was right royally pissed off not getting a crack!

Good to get away from hunting around home too.
