Nick,

Great article as always. Thanks for your tremendous effort in finding this treasure trove of reading material for us.

The Hunzakut, Kalash, Minaro and other tribes in that part of the world are believed to be descended from the Greek armies of Alexander the Great and Menander and their women still dress in clothing and headgear that resembles ancient Greek clothing from Greek paintings and inscriptions. My parents have been to those parts in the years before Partition and I hope to visit there someday if India-Pakistan relations improve. At the very least, I would also get to meet relatives and friends in other parts of Pakistan, the country of my mother's birth and a land that my maternal grandfather pined for until he died in India.

Best wishes and good hunting!

You are right about the kalash being decendents of the armies of Alexander the great, and yes they still dress in that fashion. The women are extremely beautiful and it is said that they cast a spell on the one they fancy. So do not take your wife along, you may be in trouble.I have been to these areas, though not on a hunt, and was spellbound by the beauty of the area.As far as relations are concerned I think at the present time they are the best we have ever had,so its time for you to make a move.

What a hunt! All the money in the world couldn't make Gates shoot an ibex like that without his determination and skill!

How many of you sight in quite this high? I would be worried that at midrange, I would forget to aim low purposely and end up scraping the spine...
Obviously not a problem for E Gates.

Iqbal,

My maternal grandfather Fakirchand Shah moved to India from Pakistan well after Partition and we have some relatives and old friends of the family there. I was recently in touch with Ardeshir Cowasjee of Dawn and he offered to help trace some common friends from the Pre Partition years. Let's see how it goes - I hope to visit soon and enjoy the fantastic food as well as visit our friends before they pass on. Both my wife and I enjoy Urdu shairee and we would also like to listen to Mehdi Hassan or Ghulam Ali's ghazal p[erformances in Pakistan just to compare them with the hugely popular performances that we have enjoyed in India.

As far as good looking women are concerned, I am a fan of Iman Ali and Iraj Manzoor. You guys are lucky to have some of the world's most beautiful women overall.

Thanks,

Mehul,

I'm glad I pointed out to you that we needed pictures to see what you were talking about.

You were indeed telling the truth!

Erik
