As a beginning, the375 H&H and the 416 Rigby if you are looking for versatile calibres hunting big and small stuff.
But if you are on a specialised hunt for the nasties anything in 458 and larger pushing a bullet of 480 gr at at least 2100 fps at the muzzle.

From: Bigfive Sent: 2/16/2002 8:36 PM Personally I also think 375h&h and 416 is good and probably the best proposal for the average hunter.Just don't take to many chances if hunting elephant or buffalo with a 375.You must be very sure of your shots. The bigger rifles tend to scare some guys because of the recoil but when facing a charging lion that is 20m away, I promise you the last thing you gonna think about is the recoil.
The bigger the better!!!!!!!!
