As I prepair for my first Cape Buffalo hunt ever, I need some advise from those of you who've "been there, done that". I'll be using a Ruger bolt action in 416Rigby, shooting 400 Grain Woodleigh Solids, and 400 Grain Swift A-Frames. I have the rifle scoped with a 1.75 X 6 Elite 4200. I'll be hunting in the far Eastern part of the Caprivi Strip in Namibia. The area is generally flat grasslands, as it is part of the Zambezi Flood Basin, with some forest and scrub areas as well.
The PH doesn't like to hunt large herds, preferring to look for lone bulls, or groups of 2,3 or 4 bulls.
What distance should I have my rifle sighted in for? The PH has told me that 100 yards will be the longest shot he allows. I was thinking I should sight in to be either dead on at 50 yards, or perhaps an inch high at that distance.
What do you think? Also, what do you consider acceptable group size for hunting Buffalo?
