I'd read somewhere that that you should shoot as much gun as you can handle and than something in the .416 realm was a good do all for dangerous game. Maybe a bit light for Elephant, of course the PH would be there for back up too. It was suggested in the same article to bring something a bit lighter in the .33 caliber range for lighter game if you'd already gotten the through the dangerous stuff. Seeing as the .338 Lapua is based on the Rigby case it just made sence to do a take-down rifle in these calibers. That and I've got a "thing" for take-downs. It seems that several of the gunmakers you'd listed in your post (thanks VERY MUCH for those links BTW) seem to be thinking along the same lines as I.
