To prep a big bore bolt gun...
      22/03/06 12:18 PM

So I'll be picking up a .458 Whitworth Express later this week.
I've heard the notes from numerous others that it's important to shake a big bore bolt gun down and set everything right that may need attention before getting it out to run.

The Whitworth has a single stock crossbolt up near the chamber area, I've seen others done aftermarket with a second stock bolt.
Anyone here want to outline the intent and process of that second, rearward and lower stock bolt please?

I'm going to bed the action and some of the barrel ahead of the barrel recoil lug. How much barrel bedding is proper for this kind of rifle?

Some say it's important to relieve back near the triggerguard area. Just how much relief and *exactly where*?

Any other suggestions on prepping this rifle for service are appreciated.
For what it's worth, I won't be scoping this gun so scope mount details aren't necessary for this thread, neither are recoil reducer flasks, decellerator pads, or muzzle breaking. I'm not so concerned with un-recoiling the rifle. More than anything, I just want to ensure that the rifle will be able to live well with it's own recoil without splitting the stock or rattling the action about in it's moorings.
