Factory ammo grouping
      19/12/05 10:50 PM

Hi

Recently bought a 3006 (BRNO 600) and took it out on the weekend to try it out on the benches. Not organised for reloading yet so it is factory ammo at this stage. The previous owner said that he had best results with Winchester 180 gr Silvertips and Remington 180 gr Core-lokt so I go out with a box of each. Fire a couple of rounds to warm things up and check the recoil - Hmmm a bit more than a 22 isn't it !!!

The Winchesters group into approx 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards and the five shots are about 2 inches to the left and 1 inch down. The Remingtons group into approx 2 inches (4 into an inch) and are 4 inches high and 1 inch to the right. Nothing fancy but given my experience and that they are factory loads I am OK with this. I then go thru the same exercise at 200 yards. The Winchesters group into approx 4 inches and are 4 inches left and 4 inches down and the Remingtons are 2 inches right and 4 inches high. Not as good as at 100 yards but it only has a 4x scope and I had a bit of trouble making sure I was holding onto the same point. Sorry but no chrono readings.

So I understand that if the Winchesters are 2 inches left at 100 then they will be 4 inches left at 200 and if the Remingtons are 1 inch right at 100 then they will be 2 inches right at 200. That makes sense but finally here are my questions.

1. Why does the Winchester drop 3 inches between 100 and 200 and the Remington does not drop at all. Is this something to do with velocity ?

2. I know that between the two types of ammo there will probably be different primers, different powder, different weights of powder, and different bullets but does it make that much difference given that the two groups are out by 3 inches horizontally and 5 inches vertically at 100 yards.

Searching for a simple answer but a complicated one will do if that is what it is. I just want to make sure that something abnormal is not happening here.

Thanks for taking the time to read the post.
